TTE Reveals Clever Train Ticket Booking ‘Hack’ That Can Help Senior Citizens Get Lower Berths: ‘Agar 4 Log Hai Toh…’ | VIDEO
For senior citizens, travelling long distances through train can be tough especially when they are allotted middle or upper berths. Climbing up and down repeatedly can be tiring and even risky for elderly passengers. Many often wonder why they don't get the comfort of lower berths automatically while booking tickets through IRCTC.
Recently, a Travel Ticket Examiner (TTE) shared a simple booking “hack" that could help seniors reserve lower berths more easily. The video, recorded on the Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express, has caught attention of many and sparked discussion online.
What Is The ‘Hack?'
In the video, the TTE was addressing a passenger group where all four members were senior citizens. He said, “Usme in logo ka ticket tha sabka – 4 logo mein sab log senior citizen hai aur inko jo berth mila hai, sako middle ya upper mila hai. Toh in sir ka ek doubt tha ki inko senior citizen hone oar lower berth kyu nahi mila? (There was a ticket for four people, all senior citizens, and they got middle or upper berths. One of them asked why senior citizens don't get lower berths)."
He then provided the solution: “Toh maine bataya ki maximum agar do log agar ek ticket mein book karte hai, tab unko mil sakta hai (I explained that if two people book together in one ticket, they can get lower berths)."
The TTE said that if three or four seniors book on the same ticket, the system does not automatically give the lower berth benefit. To make it work, he suggested splitting larger groups into multiple tickets. He said, “Agar 4 log hai toh 2-2 karke book karo (If four people are travelling, book two tickets for two people each)." By doing this, each pair of senior citizens can receive the lower berth benefit.
The video, shared on X (formerly Twitter), praised the TTE with the caption, “Important and useful train ticket booking hack… if you are a senior citizen. Kudos to this TTE for calmly explaining this. He deserves a raise."

Viewers Weigh In On The Booking ‘Hack'
The video caught the attention of viewers who discussed the practicality of this booking hack. Many raised concerns about how this method wouldn't work for families or larger groups.
One user commented, “In this way, if a family is travelling with 6 people, if they book 2 in one go then IRCTC will provide different bogies like S1, S7, S10, which will be more difficult for a family with elderly persons. Don't fall in this trap."
Another expressed, “Crap, so if 4 people are planning to travel together, they can't sit together? As there's no guarantee that the 2 tickets booked (as in 2 people per each ticket) will get seats together or even in the same coach!! What kind of algorithm is this???"
Some comments highlighted the need for system improvements. “Ridiculous. By default, senior citizens should get a lower berth irrespective of numbers," a person wrote, while an individual asked, “Can anyone explain why they can't give the facility to book a seat as per our choice online like we do in flights?"
“Is it so difficult to program the software that once the age is input as above 60, automatically those persons should always be allotted the lower berths. I mean, is it rocket science?" a viewer questioned.
“Typical, crazy, senseless rules or implementation. Why is it so difficult to allot 4 lower berths to senior citizens? Why this all or nothing? At the least, the more senior ones should get the lower berths and the less senior middle berths," read another comment.
New IRCTC Feature For Easier Lower Berth Booking
IRCTC has updated its rules to make train travel more comfortable for passengers who need lower berths. Now, certain groups such as senior citizens, women above 45 years, pregnant women, and people with disabilities can have lower berths reserved automatically, depending on availability at the time of booking.
To make this process easier, the online booking system now offers a special option: travellers can choose “Book only if lower berth is available." If a lower berth is not available, the system will cancel the booking automatically. This ensures that passengers who find climbing upper berths difficult are not forced into uncomfortable or unsafe situations
