Trump says Pakistan among countries testing nuclear weapons
United States President Donald Trump on Sunday told CBS News that Pakistan was among the countries actively testing nuclear weapons.
The US president made the comment during an interview on the American news channel's 60 Minutes show when asked why his administration had resumed nuclear tests for the first time since 1992.
On Thursday, Trump said he has instructed the US' Department of War to start testing the country's nuclear weapons “on an equal basis” with China and Russia immediately. Both nations would match the US' nuclear arsenal “within five years”, according to Trump.
On Sunday, Trump said that China and Russia were “making them rapidly” and that he had to do “something about denuclearisation”.
“…We have enough nuclear weapons to blow up the world 150 times,” he said. “Russia has a lot of nuclear weapons, and China will have a lot. They have some. They have quite a bit…”
Asked why the US had to conduct nuclear tests despite calls for denuclearisation, Trump said: “Well, because you have to see how they work.”
He said that he was allowing the tests to resume “because Russia announced that they were gonna be doing a test.”
Trump added that North Korea was “testing constantly”.
“Other countries are testing,” he told CBS News. “We're the only country that doesn't test...”
When the anchor said that North Korea was the only country that is testing nuclear weapons, not China and Russia, Trump insisted that Moscow and Beijing were conducting the tests.
He added: “...but they don't talk about it...we're gonna test, because they test and others test. And certainly North Korea's been testing. Pakistan's been testing.”
When the anchor said that Pakistan was not testing nuclear weapons to her understanding, Trump said: “Of course they have”.
He added: “They [countries] test way underground where people don't know exactly what's happening.”
The US president did not provide details to back his assertion that Pakistan was testing nuclear weapons or when the claimed tests had been carried out.
On Sunday, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright told Fox News that the tests ordered by Trump “are system tests”.
“These are not nuclear explosions,” he said on Sunday. “These are what we call non-critical explosions.”
Trump's comment about Pakistan testing nuclear weapons come amid tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad.
India and Pakistan fought a four-day conflict in May following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 persons.
Two days after the ceasefire, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on May 12 that “nuclear blackmail” by Pakistan will not be tolerated. He added that India had “only paused our retaliatory action on Pakistan's terrorist and military infrastructures for now” and that Islamabad's actions will be observed.
