Trump says administration to seek expedited Supreme Court ruling on tariffs
Donald Trump said his administration will go to the Supreme Court. They will seek a quick decision on tariffs. He warned that the country would face serious problems without them. Trump described a lower court ruling as shocking. The ruling created uncertainty about trillions of dollars collected through tariffs. He spoke at a press conference in the Oval Office.
US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that his administration will approach the Supreme Court tomorrow to seek an expedited ruling on tariffs, warning that without them, the country would be in “serious trouble.”
Reiterating his stance that tariffs are critical for US economic stability, Trump said his team would press the Supreme Court for a swift decision. “We are going to the SC tomorrow and we are going to ask for an expedited ruling. Stock markets need the tariffs,” he said.
Speaking at a press conference in the Oval Office, the Republican leader said the legal move was necessary after what he described as a “very shocking” ruling by a lower court that cast uncertainty over the trillions of dollars collected through tariffs.
“A lower court gave us a very shocking ruling basically saying that the trillions of dollars that are pouring into our country, they'd like to see that taken away,” Trump said, adding that “a lot of people behind that lawsuit are from foreign countries.”
The president also said the ruling was against US interests and claimed it was not the first time such a decision had gone against his policies. “They ruled against our country, they have ruled against us before,” he remarked.
The now two-time US President also acknowledged a judge appointed by former President Barack Obama who, according to him, voted in favour of the tariffs. “I gave him credit,” he noted.
Tariffs were a central pillar of Trump's trade strategy during his presidency, particularly in the economic standoff with China.
A federal appeals court has ruled that many of U.S. President Donald Trump's global tariffs were issued illegally, striking a major blow to his economic agenda and raising new questions about the limits of presidential power over trade.
On Friday, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit upheld a lower court's finding that Trump had exceeded his authority under a decades-old law that allows the president to take emergency economic measures. The 7-4 ruling said the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), passed in 1977, did not grant the White House unlimited power to impose import taxes.
“The text and structure of IEEPA make it unlikely that Congress intended to grant the president unlimited authority to impose tariffs,” the court said in its opinion.
The decision largely affirms a May ruling by the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York, which combined lawsuits filed by several businesses and US states. However, in a relief to Trump's trade agenda, the appeals court did not immediately strike down the tariffs. Instead, it allowed them to remain in place until October 14, giving the president time to appeal to the US Supreme Court.
