Trump's three reversals shake his loyal MAGA base

Donald Trump's loyal MAGA base is reportedly unsettled by recent policy reversals on the Epstein files and H-1B visas, alongside a cordial meeting with Zohran Mamdani. This discontent has led to public breaks with allies like Marjorie Taylor Greene and a visible decline in Trump's approval ratings, suggesting a weakening bond with his core supporters.
Donald Trump's return to presidency was fuelled by the devotion to him of his loyal MAGA base. After his victory, MAGA base saw him as a cultural guardian and a fighter against entrenched elites. For most of his political career, Trump managed to maintain a sense of ideological clarity and consistency that kept his base tightly aligned to him. But, in a remarkably short period, three issues -- the release of the Epstein files, his reversal on H-1B visas, and his unexpectedly cordial meeting with Zohran Mamdani -- have combined to unsettle that loyalty. The discontent has reached a point where even one of his staunchest allies, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, has broken with him publicly and announced her resignation from Congress. As recent polls show, the once-unshakable bond between Trump and MAGA appears to be in visible decline.
A revolt within the GOP
Trump's handling of the Epstein files represents the most dramatic rupture between the president and his supporters in years. Throughout his campaigns and presidency, Trump repeatedly promised to expose the Epstein list and reveal the networks of powerful individuals who had benefitted from years of secrecy. To the MAGA base, this was a moral crusade against the elite protection system they believe has governed Washington for decades.
The shock came when Trump initially resisted congressional efforts to force the Department of Justice to release these documents. This resistance sparked an unexpected rebellion among Republican lawmakers, including many who had built their political reputations on being Trump loyalists. Reports of more than fifty potential GOP defections created a moment of real vulnerability for Trump. Faced with the prospect of a humiliating defeat in the House and a public mutiny from within his own movement, he suddenly reversed course and allowed Republicans to vote to release the files.
His effort to reframe this reversal as a Republican victory and as a blow against Democrats did little to silence critics. To many supporters, the very fact that he opposed the release until forced by internal pressure indicated a retreat from his earlier, uncompromising stance. The MAGA base interpreted it as a moment in which Trump blinked, and that perception is more damaging than the policy itself.
Marjorie Taylor Greene's break with Trump
The political shockwave intensified when one of Trump's most loyal defenders, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, publicly broke with him over the Epstein files. Greene has long been one of the loudest voices in the MAGA movement and a fierce Trump ally, but her rift with the president over his reversals proved irreparable.
Greene had championed the release of the Epstein documents and had pushed aggressively for transparency. When Trump resisted the congressional effort, Greene openly rebuked him, arguing that he was abandoning one of his most important promises.
Their relationship deteriorated further when Trump reversed himself again, this time on H-1B visas, supporting the increased use of foreign skilled labor for large-scale technology projects. Greene had just said she was introducing a bill seeking to abolish the H-1B programme entirely. Trump's sudden embrace of the very policy she was trying to eliminate left her blindsided.
Her announcement that she was resigning from Congress was a stunning development. For many in the MAGA base, Greene's departure is a symbolic blow, carrying an unspoken message that the Trump they believed in was changing in ways they could not accept. Greene's resignation stands as a reflection of the broader disillusionment within the movement.
The H-1B visa shift
Trump's defense of H-1B visas in a recent TV interview and then at the US–Saudi Investment Forum marked one of the most surprising ideological reversals of his second term. After years of portraying foreign skilled workers as a threat to American jobs, Trump argued that the rapid expansion of high-tech infrastructure required more global talent and that he would welcome those people.
Many within his movement, especially those who have built their political identity around economic nationalism, saw the reversal as a rejection of the “America First” ethos. Influential right-wing voices attacked the shift as globalist, while grassroots activists questioned whether Trump was still committed to the core immigration restrictions that originally defined his candidacy. Combined with his handling of the Epstein files, the visa reversal compounded the sense that Trump was drifting away from the populist agenda that once distinguished him.
The Mamdani puzzle
The confusion among Trump's supporters deepened when he extended an unexpectedly warm welcome to Zohran Mamdani, a so-called Muslim socialist, who has won as New York mayor on a Democratic ticket. Mamdani, who stands for everything that MAGA resists, had previously been the subject of Trump's attacks, including threats of deportation and vows to punish New York City if he won the mayor elections. Their meeting at the White House, very cordial and even friendly, stunned observers and infuriated many MAGA loyalists who view Mamdani as embodying everything Trump had campaigned against.
For supporters already unsettled by the Epstein and visa reversals, the Mamdani meeting suggested an emerging pattern of Trump increasingly willing to reverse his core agendas. This moment symbolised for them a broader ideological softening.
A base losing faith amid plunging ratings
Trump's all three reversals -- on Epstein, H-1B visas and Mamdani -- have contributed to a growing sense of estrangement between Trump and his base. That estrangement is now reflected in the polls, which show his approval rating plunging. While economic anxieties and legislative frustrations play roles, the most significant factor appears to be the feeling that Trump has drifted from the uncompromising posture that initially defined his relationship with MAGA voters. Recent polls by CNN, Reuters and other outlets show that Trump's approval rating has plunged to some of the lowest levels of his second term.
Even within the Republican Party, cracks are widening. The willingness of dozens of GOP lawmakers to defy Trump on the Epstein vote marks a political shift. His once-firm grip on the party is showing signs of loosening. The fact that this internal revolt helped force Trump's reversal only reinforces the perception that he is losing control of the movement he created.
As his approval ratings sink and frustration spreads through his followers, Trump faces a challenge unlike any before. It comes not from opponents but from his own MAGA base.
