Trump's photo, 15 other Epstein-linked documents vanish from US Justice Dept's public records

Newly-released documents from disgraced late financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, including a number of pictures of former U.S

Mysterious disappearances of Jeffrey Epstein documents from a US Justice Department webpage have sparked outrage. At least 16 files, including a photo of President Donald Trump, vanished within a day. This fuels doubts about transparency in the ongoing Epstein document release. Survivors and lawmakers demand answers, feeling let down by the justice system.

At least 16 documents linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein vanished from a US Justice Department public webpage within a day of being uploaded, including an image that showed US President Donald Trump, according to an Associated Press review of the records.

The files were visible on Friday but were no longer accessible by Saturday, without any public explanation or notice from the government. The Justice Department has not clarified whether the removal was deliberate or accidental.

Among the missing material were photographs of artwork depicting nude women, as well as an image showing photographs laid out along a credenza and inside drawers. In one drawer image, a photograph of Trump appeared alongside Epstein, Melania Trump and Epstein's longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell.

The Justice Department did not respond to questions about why the files were taken down. A spokesperson for the department did not immediately reply to a request for comment, AP reported.

The unexplained disappearance quickly stirred online speculation, intensifying long-standing scrutiny of Epstein's connections to influential figures. Democrats on the House Oversight Committee pointed to the missing image in a post on X, writing: “What else is being covered up? We need transparency for the American public.”

Gaps deepen doubts over transparency

The episode added to criticism surrounding the Justice Department's broader document release on Epstein, which runs into tens of thousands of pages but has yielded little new insight into his crimes or key prosecutorial decisions.

Several highly anticipated records are absent, including FBI interviews with survivors and internal Justice Department memoranda examining why Epstein avoided serious federal charges for years. Those documents could have shed light on how investigators assessed allegations and why Epstein was allowed in 2008 to plead guilty to a relatively minor state-level prostitution charge.

The disclosures, mandated under a law recently passed by Congress, also barely reference some prominent figures long linked to Epstein, including Britain's former Prince Andrew. The omissions have renewed questions about who was scrutinised, who was not, and whether the release meaningfully advances public accountability, according to AP.

What has emerged includes new details on the Justice Department's decision in the 2000s to drop a federal investigation into Epstein, paving the way for his state-level plea deal, and a previously unseen 1996 complaint accusing Epstein of stealing photographs of children.

Redactions, delays and survivor anger

So far, the records are dominated by images of Epstein's homes in New York City and the US Virgin Islands, along with photographs of celebrities and politicians. There are numerous previously unseen images of former president Bill Clinton, but relatively few of Trump. Both men have acknowledged knowing Epstein but have denied wrongdoing, and there is no indication the photos played any role in criminal cases.

Despite a congressional deadline requiring full disclosure by Friday, the Justice Department said records would be released on a rolling basis, citing the time needed to redact survivors' names and identifying details. It has not said when further releases are expected.

That approach has angered some survivors and lawmakers who pushed for the law. Marina Lacerda, who alleges Epstein sexually abused her at his Manhattan mansion when she was 14, said: “I feel like again the DOJ, the justice system is failing us.”

Federal prosecutors charged Epstein with sex trafficking in 2019, but he died by suicide in jail before trial. The documents released so far represent only a fraction of what the department holds. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche has said Manhattan prosecutors alone amassed more than 3.6 million records from investigations into Epstein and Maxwell, many duplicating FBI material.

Much of what has been made public was already available through court filings, congressional disclosures or freedom of information requests, though now consolidated in one searchable location. Newly released records are often heavily redacted or stripped of context. One 119-page document labelled “Grand Jury-NY” was entirely blacked out.

Epstein files: New, prominent faces appear

Some Republicans allied with Trump highlighted images of Clinton alongside entertainers such as Michael Jackson and Diana Ross. Other photos show Epstein with Chris Tucker, Kevin Spacey and broadcaster Walter Cronkite. None include captions or explanations for the meetings.

Among the most substantive material are grand jury transcripts revealing that federal prosecutors appeared to have a strong case against Epstein as early as 2007. FBI agents testified about interviews with girls and young women who said they were paid to perform sex acts for Epstein, including a ninth-grade girl aged 14.

One witness described being assaulted after resisting Epstein during a massage. Another testified that Epstein hired her at 16 and later paid her to recruit other girls. “For every girl that I brought to the table he would give me $200,” she said, adding: “I also told them that if they are under age, just lie about it and tell him that you are 18.”

The documents also include a later Justice Department interview with Alexander Acosta, the US attorney who oversaw the case and later served as labour secretary during Trump's first term. Acosta cited doubts about jury perceptions and the blurred line between sex trafficking and prostitution cases. “I'm not saying it was the right view,” he said, adding that attitudes toward victims have since shifted. “There's been a lot of changes in victim shaming.”

Jennifer Freeman, a lawyer for Epstein accuser Maria Farmer, said the release left her client feeling both vindicated and devastated. “It's a triumph and a tragedy,” Freeman said. “It looks like the government did absolutely nothing. Horrible things have happened and if they investigated in even the smallest way, they could have stopped him.”Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
