Trump hails ‘daring’ US rescue of downed F-15 colonel in Iran, says both pilots now safe
President Trump announced the daring rescue of a downed American service member shot down over Iran, calling it one of the most daring operations in U.S. history. The "SAFE and SOUND" Colonel was recovered after being stranded behind enemy lines, marking the second successful crew member recovery following the F-15E Strike Eagle crash.
US President Donald Trump on Sunday announced that a missing American service member shot down over Iran has been rescued, calling the mission “one of the most daring Search and Rescue Operations in U.S. History.”
“WE GOT HIM!” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding that the recovered officer, identified as a “highly respected Colonel”, is now “SAFE and SOUND” after being stranded “behind enemy lines in the treacherous mountains of Iran.”According to the , the service member had been missing since Friday, when Iran downed a US F-15E Strike Eagle. US officials later confirmed the rescue, marking the recovery of both crew members aboard the aircraft.
Trump said the aviator is injured but “will be just fine,” and added that he had taken refuge in mountainous terrain while US forces tracked his position. He said the military had been monitoring his location “24 hours a day, and diligently planning for his rescue.”
Behind enemy lines
The launched an intensive search-and-rescue operation after the jet was brought down, focusing on a mountainous region in Iran’s southwestern province, according to AP.Trump said the mission was carried out “at my direction,” with the US military deploying “dozens of aircraft, armed with the most lethal weapons in the World” to retrieve the officer.
“Over the past several hours, the United States Military pulled off one of the most daring Search and Rescue Operations in U.S. History,” he said in a statement also shared by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
The rescued airman was the second member of the two-person crew aboard the F-15. Reuters had earlier reported that the first crew member had already been recovered, triggering a high-stakes search for the remaining airman by both the United States and Iran.
“This miraculous Search and Rescue Operation comes in addition to a successful rescue of another brave Pilot, yesterday, which we did not confirm, because we did not want to jeopardize our second rescue operation,” Trump said.
Calling the twin rescues unprecedented, he added: “This is the first time in military memory that two U.S. Pilots have been rescued, separately, deep in Enemy Territory.”

The rescue comes as the war involving the United States and Iran enters its sixth week, intensifying risks in an already volatile conflict.The fighter jet was the first US aircraft to have crashed in Iranian territory since the conflict began in late February, according to AP. The war, which started with joint US-Israel strikes on February 28, has killed thousands, disrupted global markets, cut key shipping routes and driven up fuel prices.
Two days after Trump said the US had “decimated” Iran and would finish the war “very fast,” Iran shot down two American military aircraft, including the F-15 and a US A-10 attack plane.
Iran had also announced a reward for information leading to the capture of the downed pilot, while claiming additional strikes on US assets, including .
Trump framed the successful rescues as a sign of US military strength, asserting that they demonstrated “overwhelming Air Dominance and Superiority over the Iranian skies.” He also stressed that no American personnel were killed or wounded during the operations.
“WE WILL NEVER LEAVE AN AMERICAN WARFIGHTER BEHIND!” he wrote.
