Trump Could Visit Middle East After Yearly Health Checkup On Friday: White House
US President Donald Trump may travel to West Asia shortly after visiting Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Friday for his annual health checkup, the White House said.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed on Thursday that Trump's visit to Walter Reed will include “a planned meeting and remarks with the troops," followed by his routine yearly examination. He is expected to return to the White House afterward.
“President Trump is considering going to the Middle East shortly thereafter," Leavitt added, without specifying dates or locations for the potential trip.
Leavitt's remarks were published on the White House official site and comes shortly after the announcement of Hamas and Israel's Netanyahu government's partial agreement of the Gaza peace deal. The US President had also told Axios that he is “likely going to Israel in the coming days" to address the country's parliament, the Knesset.
The Republican announced on Wednesday that Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of a ceasefire in Gaza, after days of indirect talks in Egypt.
Qatar, which helped broker the deal along with Egypt, the United States and Turkey, said the deal was the “first phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, which will lead to ending the war, the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, and the entry of aid".
“ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line as the first steps toward a Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace," Trump wrote on his Truth Social network. “I am very proud to announce that Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan".
The announcement came just a day after the second anniversary of Hamas militants' cross-border attack that triggered Israel's devastating retaliatory action on Gaza, indirect talks in Egypt yielded an agreement on the initial stage of Trump's 20-point framework to bring peace to the Palestinian enclave.
The accord, if fully implemented, would bring the two sides closer than any previous effort to halt a war that had evolved into a regional conflict, drawing in countries such as Iran, Yemen and Lebanon, deepened Israel's international isolation and reshaped West Asia.
