Trump at odds with Israel over attacks on Iran's oil infrastructure as crude prices top $100 per barrel: Report

A significant disagreement has emerged between the Trump administration and Israel over Israeli airstrikes targeting Iranian fuel infrastructure. U.S. officials expressed surprise at the scale of the attacks, fearing strategic consequences and market instability. Iran has warned of retaliation, while global crude prices surged amid escalating regional tensions.
A disagreement has surfaced between Donald Trump’s administration and Israel over Israeli airstrikes targeting fuel infrastructure in Iran, according to a report by Axios, as global crude prices surged past $100 a barrel amid fears that the expanding Middle East war could disrupt energy supplies.
The report said Israeli strikes on around 30 Iranian fuel depots on Saturday went much further than U.S. officials expected when Israel notified Washington ahead of the operation. The development has triggered what Axios described as the first significant disagreement between the two allies since the conflict began eight days earlier.
US officials are concerned that attacks on infrastructure used by ordinary Iranians could have strategic consequences, including strengthening domestic support for the Iranian government and unsettling global oil markets.
US surprised by scale of Israeli strikes
According to Axios, Israeli fighter jets struck approximately 30 fuel depots across Iran on Saturday. The attacks caused large fires in the capital Tehran, with flames visible for miles and thick smoke covering parts of the city. The Israel Defense Forces said the targeted sites were linked to the Iranian government’s logistics network.
In a statement, the military said the fuel depots “are used by the Iranian regime to supply fuel to different consumers including its military organs.”
An Israeli military official said the operation was also intended to send a message to Tehran to stop targeting Israeli civilian infrastructure.
Behind the scenes, Israeli and U.S. officials told Axios that the Israeli military informed the U.S. military before the strikes took place. However, a U.S. official said the scale of the operation caught Washington off guard.
“We don't think it was a good idea,” a senior U.S. official told the publication.
An Israeli official described the American reaction more bluntly, saying the message conveyed by the United States was “WTF”.
Neither the White House nor the Israeli military publicly commented on the reported disagreement.
Although the targeted facilities were not oil production sites, U.S. officials told Axios they were worried that images of burning fuel depots could rattle global energy markets.
“The president doesn't like the attack. He wants to save the oil. He doesn't want to burn it. And it reminds people of higher gas prices,” a Trump adviser told Axios.
Israel-US vs Iran war news live, Day 10:
Iran warns of retaliation over infrastructure attacks
Iranian officials warned that continued strikes on energy-related infrastructure could lead to retaliation.A spokesman for Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters — which coordinates military operations — said Tehran has so far refrained from targeting fuel and energy infrastructure elsewhere in the region.
However, he warned that if such attacks on Iran continue, Tehran could respond with similar strikes across the Middle East.
The spokesman also cautioned that such escalation could drive oil prices dramatically higher, suggesting they could rise as high as $200 per barrel.
Separately, Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Iran would retaliate “without delay” if attacks on infrastructure persist.
A U.S. official told Axios that the disagreement between Washington and Israel over the strikes is expected to be discussed at senior political levels between the two allies.
Iran vs US-Israel:
Oil prices surge amid fears of supply disruption
Energy markets reacted sharply as the war and the risk of infrastructure damage intensified concerns about global supply. The main U.S. oil benchmark surged more than 30 percent early Monday. By 0230 GMT, West Texas Intermediate was up 30.04 percent at $118.21 per barrel before easing slightly, while Brent crude rose 27.54 percent to $118.22.
Both benchmarks had already recorded steep weekly gains before the latest surge, with Brent climbing about 27 percent and WTI rising 35.6 percent the previous week.
The spike pushed crude prices to levels not seen in nearly four years.
The broader conflict between Israel and Iran has continued to widen geographically.
Israel’s military said it struck Iranian commanders in the Lebanese capital Beirut early Sunday, expanding the scope of its campaign after days of strikes that have reportedly left nearly 400 people dead.
Meanwhile, Iran has named Mojtaba Khamenei as the new supreme leader following the death of his father Ali Khamenei.
