Trial Of British Man Accused Of Liverpool Title Parade Crash Set To Begin: Report

A 54-year-old man accused of driving his car into crowds during Liverpool Football Club's Premier League victory parade is due to stand trial on Tuesday, facing more than 30 charges linked to the incident that injured dozens of people.

Paul Doyle, from a suburb of Liverpool, has pleaded not guilty to 31 offences, including causing grievous bodily harm with intent, wounding with intent, affray, and dangerous driving.

A jury will be sworn in Tuesday for a trial expected to run three to four weeks.

The Incident

The charges stem from events on May 26, when thousands of supporters flooded Liverpool's city centre to celebrate the club's record-equalling 20th English top-flight title.

As roads were closed for the parade, prosecutors allege Doyle “used his vehicle deliberately as a weapon," claiming he drove his Ford Galaxy Titanium directly into groups of people leaving the celebration.

Police said 134 people — including infants, children, and adults — were injured, with 50 requiring hospital treatment. No fatalities were reported.

Emergency crews described chaotic scenes, including four people trapped under the vehicle, one of them a child. Firefighters had to physically lift the car to free them.

What Police Say Happened

According to early police accounts, Doyle allegedly followed an ambulance into the closed-off Water Street area after officers cleared a path for a medical emergency. Merseyside Police quickly confirmed the incident was not terrorism-related, though the motive remains unclear.

The Victims

The 29 victims named in the charges include at least six children, the youngest just six months old at the time. Several are expected to give evidence behind screens.

Court Proceedings

Doyle, described in reports as a former Royal Marine and father of three, appeared emotional at his first court hearing on May 30, wiping away tears in the dock. Initially charged with seven offences, he was hit with 24 additional counts in August.

He formally entered his not guilty pleas via videolink on September 4, wearing a grey T-shirt and glasses. Doyle has been in custody since his arrest and was not required to attend the most recent pre-trial hearing.
