Tremors felt across West Bengal as 5.7 magnitiude quake jolts Bangladesh

Strong tremors felt in Kolkata, other parts of West Bengal
Strong tremors were felt in Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal at around 10.10 a.m. on Friday (November 21, 2025). Though the epicenter is reportedly in Bangladesh, people of West Bengal felt the jolts for a few seconds in many parts of the State.
Videos of furniture and ceiling fans shaking inside homes and offices went viral on social media from across West Bengal. Many offices in Kolkata were also evacuated following moments of panic.
According to official data from the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake was of 5.7 magnitude and occurred in Bangladesh, at a depth of 10 km.
According to United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake's epicentre was in the city of Narsingdi, about 40 km (25 miles) from Dhaka, Bangladesh's capital.
Several people were seen coming out on the streets in Kolkata and nearby areas in a state of panic as the quake jolted many early in the morning.
“I jolted out of my chair inside the office when it started shaking. I felt like I am dizzy, but later realised the fans and water bottles are all shaking,” an officer goer in south Kolkata said.
So far, no reports of casualties or major damages have been reported after the quake. Similar tremors were reported by people from Agartala, Guwahati, and other north-eastern cities.
In the meantime, political parties in West Bengal took this opportunity to trade sharp barbs online. “West Bengal just felt earthquake tremors. @MamataOfficial, was it because of SIR?” the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) wrote on their social media handle on X.
Replying to the post, All India Trinamool Congress also made a counter comment and wrote, “It's actually the ground shaking beneath the feet of @BJP4Bengal as they stare at an imminent defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections. And don't worry, the Delhi Zamindars won't miss it either; the shockwaves will reach them too.”
