‘Treating It Like Blackboard’: Visitors Climb On Each Other To Scratch Names On Walls Of Humayun’s Tomb
Humayun's Tomb is one of most iconic historical landmarks in India that draws hundreds of visitors every day. The monument is known for its beautiful architecture that represents the country's cultural heritage. Recently, it has come under the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.
A video shows visitors damaging the centuries-old walls of Humayun's Tomb. Shared on Reddit with the title “They're Literally Treating Humayun's Tomb Like a Blackboard," the clip shows people scratching their names on the monument's walls. The footage has raised serious concerns about the lack of respect for national heritage sites.
Scribbling Caught On Camera
The video shows a man writing on the wall while mounted on another person's shoulders. The Reddit user who shared the footage wrote, “I visited Humayun's Tomb recently, and I was shocked to see this happening. People were literally scratching their names on the walls, some even climbed on each other's shoulders just to do it. This place is almost 500 years old and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and we're still treating it like a school desk. I recorded this video because I honestly couldn't believe the lack of respect."
Outrage Over Monument Damage
The footage drew in sharp reactions as it spread to other social media platforms. Users expressed their shock and demanded action against those responsible.
One user commented, “Stupidity is everywhere to be seen."
Another said, “People always yelling about fundamental rights but they don't remember fundamental duties. Article 51 Duty of every citizen ‘to value and preserve the rich heritage of our composite culture.'"
“Report it. By law, damaging a UNESCO world heritage site will give you up to 2 years imprisonment or up to 1 lakh fine," someone advised.
“Hence proved, some Indians lack civic sense across generations," a person remarked.
An individual tagged Delhi police's official Instagram account, urging, “Kindly identify and arrest these dim brained."
A viewer questioned, “I wonder what those guards are for and why don't authorities take strict action against such people?"
“You should have confronted immediately and threatened to call the police. You can't deface a national monument," a user questioned.

A Glimpse Of History
Humayun's Tomb is located in Nizamuddin East, Delhi. It was built in the 16th century by Empress Bega Begum for her husband, Emperor Humayun. Recognised for its historical and architectural importance, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.
