Train fare hike December 26: Check new ticket prices for Delhi–Mumbai and Delhi–Howrah routes
Train journeys across India are set to become slightly more expensive from Friday, December 26, as Indian Railways rolls out a nationwide fare hike. This marks the second increase in train fares within six months, affecting long-distance passengers travelling in both AC and non-AC coaches on Mail and Express trains.
The revised fare structure will apply to some of the country's busiest rail routes, including Delhi–Howrah and Delhi–Mumbai, impacting lakhs of passengers who depend on rail travel for work, family visits, and holidays.
The Ministry of Railways said the fare hike was necessary to offset rising manpower and operational costs. Officials also highlighted that Indian Railways has expanded significantly over the last decade, improving connectivity and reaching remote areas, which has increased overall expenditure.
According to the Railways, the fare rationalisation exercise is expected to generate nearly Rs 600 crore in additional revenue during the current financial year, helping sustain services and infrastructure upgrades.
As per the new fare rules:
While the per-kilometre hike appears small, it leads to a noticeable increase on long-distance routes.
The Delhi–Howrah route, covering roughly 1,441 km, is one of the busiest railway corridors in the country. Indian Railways operates several regular and premium trains on this route, including the NDLS–Howrah Rajdhani Express, NDLS–Sealdah Rajdhani Express, Duronto Express, Poorva Express, and Netaji Express.
Under the revised fare chart:
The Delhi–Mumbai route, spanning approximately 1,365 km, sees heavy passenger traffic throughout the year. More than 15 trains, including premium services such as the Mumbai Central Tejas Rajdhani and Hazrat Nizamuddin–Mumbai Central Rajdhani Express, operate on this corridor.
After the fare hike:
While the hike may not significantly affect occasional travellers, frequent long-distance passengers could feel the impact over time. Indian Railways, however, maintains that the increase is modest and essential to maintain service quality and support future expansion.
With the Indian Railways fare chart 2025 now in effect, passengers are advised to check updated ticket prices on IRCTC before booking their journeys.
