To Thank His Coaching Centre, This Doctor Is Performing Free Surgeries Till 2029
Every month, on the 29th, a quiet ritual is set to unfold inside a nursing home in Davanagere, Karnataka. There are no banners announcing charity, no grand ceremonies. Instead, there is an operating theatre, a team in scrubs, and patients who would otherwise have struggled to afford surgery.
Behind this effort is Dr. Shivabasavaswamy AH, a prominent obstetrician-gynaecologist from Davanagere, who has launched a 40-month free surgery initiative titled Expert Seva Divas. The programme is his tribute to Expert PU College, Mangaluru — the institution he credits for shaping his journey into medicine.
A Gratitude Rooted in the Past
Dr. Shivabasavaswamy was a student of the 2004 batch at Expert Coaching Classes. He has often acknowledged the role of the institution’s intensive summer and Dasara holiday coaching in helping him secure a merit seat through the Common Entrance Test.
Speaking as Chief Guest at the 40th Expert Day celebrations on December 29, he formally announced the initiative, aligning it with the institution’s 40-year milestone.
“This is a tribute to my alma mater, which helped me become a doctor. It is my form of ‘guru dakshina’ to society," he said.
Forty Months, One Fixed Date
The initiative began in January 2026 and will continue until April 2029, spanning 40 months in total. Free surgeries will be performed on the 29th of every month, marking the date of Expert Day. The procedures are conducted at his Sri Mruthyunjaya Nursing Home in Davanagere.
The first Expert Seva Divas, held on January 29, saw five significant surgeries carried out by Dr. Shivabasavaswamy and his team.
What the Programme Covers
The drive includes complex caesarean sections, including complicated cases, ovarian cyst removals, tubectomies and other essential gynaecological procedures. While the doctor waives his professional surgical charges, patients are required to bear only the cost of medicines and anaesthesia, typically around Rs 1,000.
The initiative has also become a family effort. Inspired by the gesture, his wife, a paediatrician, is offering free paediatric consultations as part of the monthly programme.
Ushaprabha N Nayak, vice-chairperson of the Expert Group of Institutions, described the move as reflective of the institution’s aim to nurture professionals who give back to society.
The next Expert Seva Divas is scheduled for March 1, since February is a shorter month, continuing what has become a sustained act of gratitude in action.
