TikTok names veteran Adam Presser as CEO of US JV
Video-sharing platform TikTok named senior executive Adam Presser as the chief executive of its newly formed US joint venture, the company said in an announcement.
Presser has been with TikTok for about four years, serving as head of operations, safety, and trust. He will now lead the US arm, which was formed after a year of tussle between the Chinese-owned platform and the US government. He will work alongside a seven-member, majority-American board of directors. TikTok CEO Shou Chew will be among them.
The social media giant, now used by over 200 million Americans, on Friday finalised a deal to create a new American entity, avoiding the looming threat of a ban in the United States.
The company signed agreements with major investors, including Oracle, Silver Lake, and the Emirati investment firm MGX, to form the new joint venture, which will run as an “independent entity.”
The new version will operate under “defined safeguards that protect national security through comprehensive data protections, algorithm security, content moderation, and software assurances for US users,” the company said in a statement Thursday. American TikTok users can continue using the same app.

Questions loom
American TikTok users will be using the same app, the company has assured. But exactly how American users' feeds will be changed once the changeover happens is yet to be seen.
The algorithm, the secret sauce that powers its addictive video feed, powering the US backend, will be licensed from ByteDance and then retrained on US user data. The act of retraining the content recommendation formula is certain to at least have subtle changes to a user's personalised feeds.
Importantly, the deal was brought in to safeguard American interests and national security. The divestment may have satisfied the Trump administration, but whether it will satisfy the lawmakers who passed the divest-or-ban law remains to be seen, University of Florida media professor Andrew Selepak told AFP.
