This Delicious And Juicy Chicken Ema Datshi Is Brimming With Cheese & Protein
Ema Datshi found a massive fan following in India in recent years, especially after actor Deepika Padukone called it her favourite dish. This humble dish from Bhutan that is brimming with cheesey goodness is surprisingly easy to make and has different variations.
The chicken ema datshi is a simple, flavour‑packed dish that turns everyday chicken into a high‑protein, weeknight‑ready meal. Originating from Bhutanese cuisine, this stew‑style recipe brings tender chicken pieces together with fresh green chillies, and a creamy, spice‑balanced gravy made with cheese or yoghurt‑like ingredients.
It is packed with protein from the chicken and one can add vegetables to it as well to make it a well-rounded meal. As it cooks in a single pot, this recipe makes it easy to prepare after a long day while still feeling hearty and satisfying.

Chicken Ema Datshi Recipe
Ingredients:
For the chicken:
• 1 tsp mustard oil (any oil works)
• 500g boneless chicken thighs, cubed
• Salt, to taste
• ¼ tsp turmeric
• ½ tsp black pepper powder
For the gravy:
• 1 medium onion, thinly sliced (~100g)
• 3–4 green chillies, sliced
• 1 tsp chilli flakes (adjust to heat tolerance)
• 1 chicken stock cube (optional- I’ve used Knorr Zero Salt, available on Amazon)
• ½ cup water
• 3 cheese slices (used a mix of melty mozzarella + cheddar)
• 1 tsp cornstarch + 2 tsp water, slurry (optional, for a thicker gravy)
• Coriander leaves / spring onion greens, to finish (optional)
Method:
1. Heat mustard oil in a pan until it just starts to smoke, then bring the flame down. Add the chicken cubes, salt, turmeric, and black pepper. Cook on high for 2–3 minutes until the edges colour.
2. Add the sliced onion, green chillies, and chilli flakes. Toss for a minute.
3. Crumble in the stock cube (if using), pour in the water, and bring to a gentle simmer.
4. Once it’s simmering, drop in the cheese slices. Stir continuously until the cheese melts into a glossy sauce that clings to every cube.
5. For a thicker gravy, stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook for another 30 seconds.
6. Finish with chopped coriander and spring onion greens. Serve hot with rice, roti, or bread.
