This Child Actor, Who Worked With Mammootty, Once Played The Same Role In 5 Languages
Child actors in Indian cinemas frequently make short-lived impressions. However, Sujitha – who was born in Thiruvananthapuram on July 12, 1983 – left behind a legacy so unique that it spanned three major celebrities, five languages, and one iconic part that she completely customised.
Originally from Thiruvananthapuram, Sujitha was born into a Malayali family and later settled in Chennai. She made her screen debut at the age of 41 days as the granddaughter of legendary actress KR Vijaya in the Tamil movie Abbhas. What came next was one of the most amazing child acting careers viewers ever witnessed, including multiple languages, superstars, and a memorable character.
Breakthrough Through a Deaf-Mute Boy Role
Sujitha’s parents, TVS Mani and Radha, had no connection to cinema, but they both loved films. Radha wanted to see her children, Sujitha and her older brother Suresh (Surya Kiran), get to the movies. Luckily, both Sujitha and Suresh both ended up in films.
Following Abbas, she starred in Mundhanai Mudichu (1983) as the daughter of K Bhagyaraj and Urvashi. Sujitha later had minor parts in a few other Tamil and Malayalam films. Her breakthrough came when she starred in the Fazil-directed Malayalam film Poovinu Puthiya Poonthennal (1986), featuring Mammootty in the lead role.
The centre of the movie focuses on Baby Sujitha (Benny alias Kittu), who plays a traumatised deaf-mute youngster who initiates the entire drama. The deaf and dumb youngster flees after witnessing his widowed mother being murdered by two men. Kiran (played by Mammootty), an alcoholic who is unable to move on from the terrible death of his own family, adopts Benny and names him Kittu after his own son.
Despite a competitive release window, Sujitha’s performance was widely hailed as the film’s emotional core when it debuted on Onam on September 12, 1986.
Remake After Remake with the Same Child
Sujitha became more recognised as a result of the original movie’s success, which prompted multiple remakes in various languages. The filmmakers continued to use the same young actress to play the role that made the story so memorable as it was translated into other Indian languages.
Fazil himself directed the Tamil version Poovizhi Vasalile (1987), featuring Sathyaraj in lead. Chiranjeevi appeared in A. Kodandarami Reddy’s Telugu adaptation, Pasivadi Pranam (1987). Later, the tale reached Hindi audiences through Kirti Kumar’s 1988 Hindi-language drama thriller Hatya (1988), featuring Govinda, Neelam, Sujitha, Anupam Kher, and Johnny Lever feature. Sujitha returned to the role in several iterations, winning praise from people of all languages.
Many Indian viewers were unaware for years that the tragic deaf-mute boy they saw on screen was actually a girl. She is the only youngster to have performed in five different languages for the same role. As a young performer, Sujitha appeared in over 40 films in different languages.
Sujitha’s Continued Success
Later, she started playing roles that corresponded with her actual age. In the 1990s, she even made appearances in a few Mani Ratnam films, such as Roja, Bombay, and Iruvar. She became more famous with parts in films like Summer in Bethlehem, Vaalee, Ingane Oru Nilapakshi, Aayirathil Oruvan, Jai Chiranjeeva, and Thaandavam, among others.
Sujitha appeared in over 100 South Indian and Hindi-language films and television series. She gained considerable fame in television for her performance as Unnimaya in Harichandanam, which made her particularly popular among Malayalam audiences. Her reputation was further solidified by her roles in dramas like Indira, Devimahathmyam, Sangamam, Snehasangamam, and Kumarasambhavam.
