The Met Gala 2026 saw its usual mix of bold fashion and celebrity appearances, but one look in particular ended up starting a major discussion online. Indian model Bhavitha Mandava, who recently became the first Indian model to open a Chanel show, attended the event for the first time on May 4.
Instead of wearing a dramatic couture outfit, Bhavitha appeared in a much simpler look styled by Chanel. While some people appreciated the understated fashion choice, many others felt the brand could have dressed her better for such a major moment.
Chanel Look Sparks Criticism Online
Bhavitha wore a loose pale beige chiffon shirt with soft ruffle details and paired it with light blue high-waisted jeans. She completed the outfit with Chanel’s classic slingback heels and diamond earrings.
While a few fashion followers viewed the look as elegant and minimal, several social media users compared it to the more extravagant outfits worn by other celebrities and models at the event.
Many people especially pointed out the contrast between Bhavitha’s outfit and the heavily styled looks seen on the Met Gala carpet that night.

As pictures from the event spread online, criticism against Chanel quickly grew stronger. Some users even accused the luxury brand of not putting enough effort into Bhavitha’s debut appearance.
A user wrote, “Why did they send Bhavitha to the Met Gala in jeans?? This feels like a microaggression." Another commented, “It feels a bit racist. Every other ambassador is in custom couture, and she’s in a mall outfit."

Some reactions were emotional, with users saying the model deserved a more memorable look for such a huge fashion event. “I feel bad for her. Imagine seeing other celebrities from India and other countries dressed so amazingly, while she’s stuck in that outfit. I would’ve cried if I were her. It honestly feels like sabotage from the brand and even racism," a post read.
Another added, “She’s the brand ambassador, and it’s her Met Gala debut. They didn’t even try…"
Others directly criticised Chanel’s styling choice. “Honestly, Chanel is dead to me for this. This move is incredibly weird and completely off-brand," a user wrote. Another questioned, “Why would they do this to her? They could have at least given her a dress."
A comment that gained attention read, “It’s so cruel, she doesn’t look happy to be there. Her face says it all."

For several users online, Bhavitha’s Met Gala appearance represented an important moment for Indian and South Asian representation in global fashion.
Because of that, many people expected Chanel to give her a standout couture look instead of a more casual outfit built around denim jeans.
So far, Chanel has not publicly responded to the criticism. However, the brand later shared photos of Bhavitha’s look on its Instagram Stories.
