The Story Behind Rohini Acharya's Wedding: How Lalu Yadav's IAS Friend Became His Relative
In the days following the 2025 Bihar Assembly election results, the churn within the RJD has pushed Lalu Prasad Yadav's daughter, Rohini Acharya, back into public conversation. Her sharp criticism of brother Tejashwi Yadav and her decision to distance herself from the party have only heightened curiosity about her life away from politics. Yet, beyond the current storm lies a lesser-known chapter from more than two decades ago, a wedding shaped by old friendships and unexpected alliances.
Those close to the family recall that Lalu Prasad Yadav's long-standing camaraderie with Rao Ranvijay Singh became the bridge that eventually turned a friend into relative. Singh, a respected name in Bihar's administrative circles, cleared the UPSC examination and served in the Indian Revenue Service, holding positions in the Income Tax Department. His family, originally from Daungar near Aurangabad, enjoys a strong reputation, with several members in government service. His wife was a professor, adding to the family's academic profile.
It was this association that led to the marriage of Rohini Acharya and Samresh Singh on May 24, 2002. The match was arranged much earlier, in 1999, when Rohini was still pursuing her MBBS at MGM Medical College in Jamshedpur. She completed her medical education after the wedding but chose not to enter clinical practice. Born on June 1, 1979 in Patna, Rohini has often described herself as a homemaker first, despite her medical degree.

Her husband, Samresh Singh, trained as a mechanical engineer before moving to Singapore for an MBA. An opportunity in the IT sector kept him there, and the couple eventually made the city-state their home. They now live in Singapore with their daughter and two sons, maintaining a life far removed from the political bustle that frequently engulfs their extended family back in Bihar.
Rohini's name has surfaced prominently at key moments in recent years. In 2022, she won admiration nationwide after donating a kidney to her father, a decision that was widely hailed as an extraordinary gesture of filial devotion. Two years later, she contested the Saran Lok Sabha seat, though the electoral debut did not translate into a win.
