In modern times, cancer treatment is not only about sustaining life but also about ensuring its quality. Advances in medical technology have introduced less invasive methods, more precise procedures, and treatment approaches that are increasingly sensitive to patients’ comfort. The focus is shifting from purely intervention-driven care to smarter, more holistic methods that help patients recover while maintaining their independence and daily routines.
One such innovation is known as cryoablation, popularly referred to as “freeze therapy."
What is Freeze Therapy?
Freeze therapy, or cryoablation, is a minimally invasive treatment that destroys cancer cells through extreme cold. In this procedure, interventional radiologists insert thin needles into the tumour and deliver very cold gases, forming an “ice ball" that freezes and kills the diseased cells.
Unlike conventional surgery, which often involves large incisions and removal of part or all of an organ, cryoablation allows doctors to selectively target and destroy the tumour while preserving the surrounding healthy tissue. The benefits include less post-procedural pain, faster recovery, shorter hospital stays, and better preservation of organ function. As a result, it is becoming an increasingly preferred option for treating tumours in organs such as the kidney, liver, and lungs.
Use of Freeze Therapy in Real Life
Consider the case of a 48-year-old patient, S. Jayraj (name changed), whose journey with kidney cancer had already been long and challenging. After losing his right kidney to cancer, he underwent another complex surgery when the disease spread to his left kidney and pancreas. Just when his condition began to stabilise, a new tumour developed in the remaining portion of his only kidney.
At this stage, another surgery posed significant risks, not just to his health but also to his independence, potentially leading to lifelong dialysis.
Given the complexity of the case, a multidisciplinary team at Manipal Hospital, Yeshwanthpur, led by experts including Dr Rajesh Helavar, Senior Consultant – Vascular & Interventional Radiology, and Dr Ajay Shetty, Lead Consultant – Urology, Renal Transplantation & Robotic Surgery, opted for cryoablation instead of conventional surgery.
The minimally invasive procedure used extreme cold to precisely destroy the tumour while preserving the remaining kidney function. It was successfully performed by the interventional radiology team, including Dr. Rajesh V. Helavar and Dr. Sreedhara B.C., Consultant – Interventional Radiology, Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road. This approach allowed the patient to avoid another major surgery and recover faster without compromising his quality of life.
A Shift Towards Life-Centred Treatment
Approaches such as cryoablation are significant not only for their effectiveness but also for their ability to align treatment with a patient’s lifestyle. With quicker recovery, reduced physical strain, and preserved organ function, patients can return to their daily lives with minimal disruption.
