‘The Last Sikh In Afghanistan’ Speaks On Camera — With Taliban Watching Closely
While in Afghanistan, Indian vlogger Pulkit Chaudhary met Harjeet Singh, a man he described as “The Last Sikh" who continues to live in Ghazni. Pulkit captured their meeting in a video that offers viewers a rare look into the life of someone who has chosen to stay behind even as most of his community left.
Afghanistan was once home to thousands of Sikhs. Over the years, war, migration and persecution forced many families to move away. Through this meeting, Pulkit tried to document the experience of one man who continues to live there.
Meeting Harjeet Singh
Pulkit shared the story in a video titled “Alone but unbroken – The Last Sikh in Afghanistan." It begins with him approaching Harjeet and asking if he could record a video. Harjeet hesitates, unsure if it is safe to be filmed.
Pulkit later explained in the comments, “When I first met him, he refused to let me record anything. He was scared — maybe because of everything he had seen in his life, living alone as the last Sikh in Afghanistan. But after he checked my Indian documents and realised that I truly came from India, he smiled and said, ‘You can record. The world should know my story.'"
‘Meri Toh Paidaish Yahi Ki Hai'
As they talked, Pulkit asks how long Harjeet has been living in Afghanistan. Harjeet replies, “Meri toh paidaish yahi ki hai. Sultan Mehmood ke time se. (I was born here itself. We are here since the time of Sultan Mehmood)."
He tells Pulkit that only two Sikhs remain in the country, including him. The other has temporarily gone to India. According to Harjeet, the decline in the Sikh population began around 2016–2018. Many who still have businesses in Afghanistan now manage them from India.
Despite everything, Harjeet says he faces no issues at present. “Taliban se koi mushkil nahi hai (I have no problem with Taliban)," he says.
Towards the end of their meeting, Harjeet even asks Pulkit if he needs any help. Pulkit politely declines.
In the caption of his post, Pulkit wrote, “In this emotional and eye-opening documentary, I travel deep into Afghanistan to meet the last remaining Sikh man still living there. Once home to thousands of Sikhs, Afghanistan's Sikh community has almost vanished due to decades of war, persecution, and migration. But one man — brave, humble, and full of faith — still chooses to stay. Through his eyes, we witness what it truly means to hold onto your faith, identity, and homeland when everything around you changes. His story isn't just about religion — it's about courage, loneliness, and hope."

Earlier this month, members of the Afghan Sikh and Hindu communities met Taliban Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi at the Embassy of Afghanistan in New Delhi. The minister assured them that property rights for minorities would be restored and promised security and support for the upkeep of gurdwaras.
The delegation also requested that the Afghan government invite Sikh and Hindu leaders from India to assist in the restoration and maintenance of historic gurdwaras and temples in Afghanistan. Many Sikhs had fled the country after the Taliban took control of Kabul in 2021.
