Hardik Pandya: The all-rounder who turns a strong Indian T20 team into a complete one

Hardik Pandya is the Indian T20 team's most critical element, providing balance and covering all bases. His unique seam-bowling all-round ability, combining tactical bowling with strong batting, makes him indispensable. Without him, the team's formidable strength falters, exposing fragilities that quality opposition could exploit.
He will not take the most wickets in the tournament, and he will not even make the most runs in his team. His fielding will be safe, and he might have one moment of huge influence when he pulls off a stunning catch or a predatory run out, but he will not be the one remembered for what he brought to the table on the field. He does not have a leadership role, and his decisions will not be scrutinised or praised as much as they should.
Yet, Hardik Pandya is the most critical element of this Indian Twenty20 team. Hardik is the answer to many questions, some of which don't get asked daily and others that haven't even arisen yet. He is that most elusive of species in Indian cricket, the seam-bowling allrounder.
Hardik makes the difference between this team fielding a playing eleven that is merely very good and one that has all bases covered against all opposition and all conditions, and is, on paper, unbeatable.
The point of Hardik is not that he bowls and bats to a standard that either would get him into the team, the traditional definition of an all-rounder. His bowling alone probably would not stave off the challenge a frontline bowler poses if there were only one spot to fill.
With the bat, Hardik is as good as anyone around. But, counterintuitively, it is his bowling that sets Hardik apart. The basic hardware is in place, no doubt about that. Hardik can be banked on for two, possibly three good overs every game, but you would prefer not to be in a position where he must give you four tight overs each game. With the ball, Hardik's greatest strength is his game sense.
He has the ability to read a situation and an intuitive feel for where the game is poised and where it could go. It is here that he is best placed to exploit the vulnerability of an opposition batsman, manufacturing a wicket when it's needed the most. Such bowlers are often called partnership breakers—when in reality every single wicket does exactly that — and it is because the dismissal is produced more by tactical nous or grasp of the opportunity, rather than the magic of the delivery itself.
The experience Hardik has gained over the years, principally as a batsman, stands him in great stead as a bowler. Where a young, upcoming fast bowler or an aspiring seam allrounder might fall back on skills and plans, thereby playing into the hands of a batsman who is on top of his game or taking calculated risks and riding his luck, Hardik creates discomfort.
Hardik makes the batsman do something he would rather not, and this greatly increases the bowlers' chances of success. The Indian cricket establishment got disproportionately excited about Hardik's arrival because they knew exactly what he brought as a package.
If Hardik were to get injured and cannot play or can only play as a batsman, it changes the complexion and balance of the eleven. There are replacements at hand: Shivam Dube hits a long ball and can delivers steady overs, Washington Sundar bats anywhere and will bowl restrictively, Tilak Varma is brilliant in the middle order and will chip in with the ball.
But, if any of these players comes in for Hardik, it's not a like-for-like replacement in that another change has to be made to keep the balance. In the case of Washington or Tilak, the frontline fast bowling needs to be shored up, which means Jasprit Bumrah needs two specialist seamers for company. If Dube steps into the breach, lower-order six-hitting is catered to, but the batting that comes before him needs another player who is strong at constructing an innings because you don't want him out in the middle too early in the piece. In the lead-up to the T20 World Cup beginning February 7, the Indian team looks more than formidable; it is the team to beat. But that is only as long as Hardik holds everything together.
Take him out of the equation, and suddenly the playing eleven opens itself up to fragilities that could be exploited by quality opposition. There is no reason to believe that the replacements cannot step up and do the job on any given day. It's just that they have not, over and over, in tight situations, with nothing to fall back on. Hardik has. What he brings to the mix is the difference between belief and hope. When Hardik is around, the captain feels calm rather than anxious, and that powerfully changes how the entire team plays.
