A few days after the launch of Tesla's Model Y at the Gurugram centre on Wednesday, members of the startup community were seen arriving to pick up their deliveries.In a post on Tesla's official handle, Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma, former Zomato food delivery CEO Rakesh Ranjan, among others, were spotted at the Orchid Business Park, Gurugram centre unveiled on November 26.
The Elon Musk-led EV maker has sold 140 units in India this year since it opened bookings in mid-July, ET reported.
This marks Tesla's third facility in India. Unlike its earlier experience centres in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in July and Delhi's Aerocity in August, which mainly served as display and brand-familiarisation spaces, the Gurugram centre offers consultations, bookings, and test-drive support, signalling Tesla's shift toward a more structured retail network, ET has learnt.
It launched two imported Model Y variants priced at Rs 59.89 lakh and Rs 67.89 lakh, both shipped from Shanghai and subject to a 70% import duty — making them nearly 30% costlier than in the US.
The Gurugram centre is led by Sharad Agarwal, who took charge in November. Agarwal, formerly head of Lamborghini India and a senior sales executive at Audi India, reflects Tesla's push to strengthen its premium electric vehicle (EV) presence in the country.
In August, Tesla leased 33,475 sq ft retail and service centre space at Orchid Business Park for a monthly rental of Rs 40 lakh. The company aims to set up charging points at the homes of vehicle owners, destinations like malls and hotels, and superchargers in major cities to accelerate the adoption of EVs.
With the upcoming commissioning of the Gurugram charging station, Tesla will operate four charging stations across India, equipped with 16 superchargers and 10 destination chargers.
Tesla remains a dominant EV player, delivering nearly 497,000 vehicles in the September quarter of 2025 and posting a 12% revenue rise to $28.1 billion.
