Bihar elections: Tejashwi Yadav rejects exit poll predictions, says NDA ‘sweating’ about results

Rashtriya Janata Dal leader and the Opposition's chief ministerial face Tejashwi Yadav on Wednesday dismissed exit polls that projected a victory for the ruling National Democratic Alliance in the Bihar Assembly elections.
Several exit polls released on Tuesday evening, after the second and final phase of polling ended, forecast that the NDA would defeat the Opposition Mahagathbandhan coalition.
On Wednesday, Yadav claimed that the exit polls were made public even as voting was still underway in some areas.
“The feedback we are getting is that the BJP and the NDA are left sweating,” he said.
He also alleged that the surveys were conducted under pressure from officials on election duty.
“People are restless and panicked,” he claimed. “We neither live in false hope from surveys nor in delusion. These surveys are brought only under pressure by election officials to create a psychological impact.”
Yadav also accused the media of spreading propaganda in favour of the Narendra Modi government.
“What is decided by the Prime Minister's Office, what Amit Shah writes down for channels, is what the media runs,” he alleged.
Referring to the high voter turnout in this election, Yadav said that the increase in numbers is signalling a demand for change.
“Compared with the 2020 elections, 72 lakh more people have voted this time,” he said. “These votes were not to save Nitish Kumar but to change the government. This is a vote for change... the government is going to be changed.”
The Election Commission on Tuesday said that the voter turnout in the Bihar Assembly elections was a record 66.9%. This was the highest polling percentage in the state since 1951.
While the turnout in the first phase on November 6 for 121 of the 243 constituencies was 65%, the provisional polling percentage in the second phase on Tuesday was 68.7%, the poll panel said.
The overall turnout among women was 71.6% and 62.8% for men, it added.
The votes will be counted on Friday.
The main contest in Bihar is between the ruling National Democratic Alliance and the Opposition Mahagathbandhan alliance.
The NDA comprises Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal (United), the Bharatiya Janata Party, Union minister Chirag Paswan's faction of the Lok Janshakti Party, the Rashtriya Lok Morcha and the Hindustani Awam Morcha.
The Mahagathbandhan comprises the Rashtriya Janata Dal, the Congress, the Vikassheel Insaan Party and three Left parties – the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) – along with the newly-formed Indian Inclusive Party.
Former political strategist Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj, which is not part of the two main alliances, is making its electoral debut.
Several exit polls predicted that the newly-formed party may fail to win even a single seat in the elections, with projections ranging from zero to five seats.
