A jellybean-sized patch on Deepinder Goyal's forehead has pushed him into Silicon Valley's most radical club: the tech billionaires trying to hack aging itself. With Temple — a brain-blood-flow tracker — the Zomato founder becomes India's boldest entrant in the global longevity boom.
Deepinder Goyal, in early December, revealed that his latest invention — an experimental wearable called Temple — is “coming soon.” At first glance, the tiny golden patch resembles a harmless jellybean. But according to Goyal's own social media posts, he's been wearing it for nearly a month, and it promises to do far more than its minimalist design suggests.
The sensor, stuck discreetly to his forehead, immediately places him in Silicon Valley's strangest and most ambitious club: the billionaires trying to out-engineer death.
Goyal, the CEO of Eternal (the parent company of Zomato and Blinkit), has spent 2025 shuttling between food delivery, quick commerce and a new slate of experiments. Now, he's making a sharper pivot into deeptech and longevity. With Temple — a wearable designed to track brain blood flow in real time — Goyal becomes the latest tech founder to wager that aging is simply a technical problem waiting for a solution.
He is hardly alone. Conversations about living past 100 have moved from science fiction into geopolitics, with China's Xi Jinping and Russia's Vladimir Putin getting caught on hot mic talking about living to 150 earlier this year. And for more than a decade, tech leaders have been pouring money into extending human lifespan.
Goyal's entry marks India's most high-profile addition to a global movement dominated so far by US tech founders.
But why are so many tech entrepreneurs — not traditional pharma giants — driving this space?

Why tech founders think they can hack death
Unlike Big Pharma, tech billionaires come with a very different worldview: Death is an engineering problem, not destiny.Peter Thiel, who has backed Unity Biotechnology and the Methuselah Foundation, once told Business Insider (2012): “There are all these people who say that death is natural… nothing can be further from the truth.”
They are wired for moonshots. They built software that scaled to billions; now they're framing biology, cognition and aging the same way — as systems that can be optimised.
They can afford to wait. Longevity research takes decades. Tech founders have both the capital and the patience to make long-horizon bets.
There's also real money to be made. As early as 2019, Bank of America projected the anti-aging and longevity industry could hit $600 billion by 2025, driven by genomics, AI health, “ammortality” tech and moonshot medicine. Genomics alone, BofA said, could be a $41 billion market by 2025.
They see a species-level transformation. OpenAI's Sam Altman — who put $180 million into Retro Biosciences to add a decade to human lifespan — told Business Insider that longevity needs an “OpenAI-type effort.”
It's tech's characteristic combination of hubris and idealism: the belief that they can reprogramme life itself.
The global longevity club
The cast is now familiar:Jeff Bezos is reportedly backing Altos Labs, which aims to reverse disease through cellular rejuvenation.
Peter Thiel has spent millions on anti-aging drugs, regenerative medicine, and cryonics.
Larry Ellison funneled over $430 million in grants to aging research through the Ellison Medical Foundation before 2013.
Larry Page built Calico Labs in 2013, now seen as a precursor to Altos.
Sergey Brin has spent more than $1 billion on Parkinson's research and helped spin out Alphabet's Verily Life Sciences.
Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan founded the Breakthrough Prize and committed millions to life-sciences research through CZI.
Bryan Johnson, perhaps the poster child of biohacking, has slowed his “biological age” through a $2 million-a-year regimen.
It's a mix of institutional ventures, moonshot labs and a culture of extreme self-experimentation.

Temple: Deepinder Goyal's entry into brain-tech
The new wearable, teased in December, aims to track brain blood flow continuously.Goyal also clarified that Temple isn't part of Eternal — suggesting he sees it as a standalone deeptech venture.
Temple aligns with a global boom in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). According to a World Economic Forum report from 2024, nearly 700 companies worldwide are now involved in BCI research. The market is projected to hit $6.2 billion by 2030.
The BCI gold rush
Much of the excitement comes from Neuralink, Elon Musk's brain-implant startup — valued at $9 billion — which has sparked a race in the space.Neuralink is pushing toward consumer applications, not just medical ones. It aims to implant a device in a healthy person by 2030, Bloomberg reported earlier this year.
It's planning a new trial to read speech directly from the brain.
The company imagines interfacing directly with AI models “at the speed of thought.”
BCIs are no longer confined to paralysis treatment or research labs. Gaming, mental wellness, neuro-marketing and adaptive learning are now emerging use cases.
And India — with emerging startups and now Goyal's Temple — is beginning to register on that global map.

Why this moment matters
The convergence of longevity science, AI, neuroscience and personal-tech hardware is collapsing previously separate industries. A tech billionaire entering deeptech was once a curiosity. Today it's almost expected.India is now pushing aggressively into semiconductors, aerospace and biotech. The BCI and longevity markets are expanding rapidly.
And global interest in extending human lifespan has gone from dinner-table debate to geopolitical priority.
The big question
Whether these bets will deliver anything close to age reversal or mind-to-machine communication is unclear.But the ambition is unmistakable: a future where living to 120 is normal, where disease is engineered away, and where human cognition meshes seamlessly with machines.
That future may take decades. But for tech founders like Goyal, Bezos, Altman and Thiel, decades are exactly the timelines they're betting on.
