Tanmay Bhat Opens Up About GLP-1 Drugs Not Working And His Genetic Report
Comedian and content creator Tanmay Bhat has revealed that his experience with GLP-1 medications, widely used for diabetes and increasingly prescribed for weight management has not gone as expected. Despite being on the treatment, he says he has noticed no reduction in appetite, prompting him to explore possible genetic and medical explanations.
GLP-1 receptor agonists, including semaglutide and tirzepatide, are FDA-approved drugs designed to help regulate blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. In recent years, they have also gained popularity for their ability to promote weight loss by slowing digestion and increasing feelings of fullness.
Tanmay Bhat shares concerns about lack of appetite suppression. In a candid post on X, Bhat asked if others had experienced similar results.
“Anybody here who’s fu**in around with GLP1’s experienced zero appetite suppression? I have experienced zero appetite suppression," he wrote, adding that his genetic report pointed to a possible explanation. “Upon further investigation, my gene report suggested a BDNF gene variant that is prone to weakened satiety signalling. Anybody here an expert on this matter?"

He later shared that he had come across information suggesting combination therapies as a possible solution.
“Another proposed solution that I read was combining Tirz with Cagrilinitide. Unable to find a trustworthy source for Cagri. Any leads would be appreciated," he posted, also asking for recommendations on reliable peptide sources in India.
Responding to criticism, he recalls losing 75 kg without medication. While many users offered advice and shared their own experiences, some questioned his decision to use medication for weight loss. One commenter suggested relying solely on lifestyle changes instead of drugs.
Bhat responded by pointing out his own weight-loss history and clarifying his reasons for trying newer treatments.
“Chill yaar, I’ve lost over 75 kilos without touching a single GLP1 injection," he wrote. “But I like all new health tech and I am dabbling with GLP1s to see how I feel about it. I workout, I eat well, I have consistent blood works for the last 5 years. I have great guidance, I know what I’m doing. Spare me moral lecture pls."

Why GLP-1 drugs may not suppress appetite in some people
Although GLP-1 medications are effective for many, doctors note that results can vary.
Dose and adjustment period: Medical experts, including those at the Cleveland Clinic, note that these drugs are typically introduced at lower doses and gradually increased. It may take several weeks or months before appetite suppression becomes noticeable.
Genetic and biological differences: Some individuals may be “non-responders," meaning their bodies do not react strongly to the medication. Genetics, metabolic factors, and other health conditions can influence how the drugs work.
Diet and lifestyle factors: Eating patterns also play a role. Diets high in refined carbohydrates and ultra-processed foods may blunt the medication’s appetite-reducing effects, while balanced, protein-rich diets tend to support better outcomes.

Bhat’s experience highlights an important reality: weight management treatments do not work the same way for everyone. Even with advanced therapies, individual biology, genetics, and lifestyle can influence results.
Health experts emphasise that GLP-1 medications should be used only under proper medical supervision, with personalised guidance to determine the safest and most effective approach for each individual.
