Tamil Nadu Election: From AIADMK-Led NDA To Ruling DMK, What Do The Alliances Look Like?

Tamil Nadu Election: From AIADMK-Led NDA To Ruling DMK, What Do The Alliances Look Like?
Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026: The battle lines are drawn and Tamil Nadu is ready for a high-stakes assembly election on April 23, which will move away from a traditionally bipolar to a three-cornered contest this time.
Tamil Nadu’s 56.7 million-strong electorate is set to decide the future of the “Dravidian model", and will also have the option to vote not only for the two Dravidian titans – the DMK and AIADMK – but also actor-turned-politician Vijay’s TVK.
Amid the frenzy is the usual grind for political parties as the election nears, with seat-sharing pacts, manifesto launch, ideological back-and-forth, and extensive campaigning.
The ruling DMK, led by Chief Minister MK Stalin, has moved with clinical precision to consolidate its Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA).
Seeking to retain power by projecting ‘Dravidian Model 2.0’, the DMK has finalised its seat-sharing arrangements with a focus on stability and internal cohesion. It will fight on 164 out of the 234 assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu, stressing on its role as the dominant force in the alliance.
But, its rising sun symbol will appear in 175 constituencies as seven candidates from smaller allied parties have agreed to contest under its banner. The allocation of the remaining seats reflects a strategic distribution among long-term partners.
The Congress has been allotted 28 seats, signifying the depth of its “long-term" partnership with the Dravidian party. Other significant allocations include the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) with eight seats – six reserved and two general – reflecting its influence among Dalit communities. The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) will contest 10 seats, while the Left parties – comprising the CPI and CPI(M) – have been allotted five seats each.
Smaller allies like the MDMK (four seats), IUML (two seats), and KMDK (two seats) further round out a front that Stalin claims is professional and representative, boasting a candidate list that includes 15 doctors and 29 advocates.
“We may have come last, but we are the latest," Stalin said while responding to those who criticised the DMK’s delay in announcing its seat-sharing pact with its allies.
Fresh from a churning, the AIADMK has reassembled the NDA with a singular focus: unseating the DMK government by highlighting perceived administrative failures.
The AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, or EPS, has been vocal in his criticism labelling the DMK a “family party driven by dynastic politics". It has finalised its arrangement with the AIADMK contesting 169 seats, while allies have been allocated the remaining 65.
The BJP, a key partner in this alliance, will contest 27 constituencies including high-profile areas such as Mylapore and Coimbatore North. Union minister Piyush Goyal, overseeing the state’s affairs, expressed immense confidence saying the “NDA is going to sweep the elections" and provide a government focused on development for farmers and fishermen.
The alliance also includes the Anbumani Ramadoss-led Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), which has taken 18 seats, and the AMMK led by TTV Dhinakaran with 11 seats. The NDA’s campaign strategy centres on attacking the DMK’s record on law and order and disaster management.
Palaniswami has specifically targeted the state government’s response to recent floods in southern districts, alleging a failure to act despite warnings and contrasted it with the “golden period" of the AIADMK rule. To woo the electorate, its manifesto has promised significant welfare measures including monthly financial assistance of Rs 2,000 for women heads of households and free cooking gas.
This assembly election marks a significant departure from tradition with the electoral debut of actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
Vijay’s entry is widely expected to disrupt the established order, potentially turning the contest into a genuine three-way battle. While established leaders like Palaniswami have responded cautiously to his presence, saying the true impact will only be known after the results, the TVK is actively positioning itself as a credible alternative to the two Dravidian giants.
The TVK has already made it clear that it will not be joining the existing major blocs, aiming instead to capture the imagination of a segment of the electorate seeking “value-based politics".
The political landscape is dotted with the movement of smaller factions and parties that have broken away from the primary alliances.
In a notable development, a faction of the PMK led by S Ramadoss has split from the main party to form an alliance with VK Sasikala’s newly launched All India Puratchi Thalaivar Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AIPTMMK). Ramadoss said this partnership has “created a tremor" in the political scene and announced their intention to independently contest all 234 seats.
Simultaneously, the Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK), led by T Velmurugan, has officially exited the DMK-led alliance citing a “big brother attitude" within the ruling coalition and expressed dissatisfaction over being offered only a single seat. He has ruled out joining the NDA “at any cost", alleging that the DMK government failed to address critical issues concerning land rights and social justice. He is now reportedly in talks with over 25 smaller organisations to form a new, independent front.
