Taiwan’s MediaTek is open to sourcing more India chips

MediaTek, one of the world's largest fabless semiconductor companies, is open to sourcing more of its chips from India as the local ecosystem develops, the Taiwanese firm's India head said.
“If local consumption and manufacturing of chips grow, and the ecosystem becomes robust enough to support cost-effective production, it would make strong business sense to shift more assembly or manufacturing to India,” Anku Jain, managing director of MediaTek India, told ET here on Wednesday.
“It depends on the maturity of (foundry) partners if and when they evolve in India,” he said.
MediaTek is a fabless firm that takes chips from its foundry partners.
It commands about 45%-47% share of India's smartphone chipset market.
“It is exciting to see that multiple companies are making chips. If they are able to fulfil the requirements, we will be very excited to use it,” Jain said.
He said India rightly started its semiconductor journey with 28 nanometre (nm) and other nodes that are relatively less complex to manufacture compared to cutting-edge nodes such as 6nm and 4nm that are used in modern flagship smartphones.
These initiatives are fostering a vibrant ecosystem for fabless firms, he noted.
However, “India needs more push in advanced R&D and talent development for cutting-edge nodes, which are critical for global competitiveness,” Jain said.
Continued government support and investment in talent and infrastructure will be key to bridging gaps and strengthening India's position in the global semiconductor landscape, he said.
MediaTek has a large R&D team in India, which has been developing different technology sets, computing, connectivity, and software for many years.
“Around 90% of our talent here is for global R&D, as they work closely with our global design centres on both hardware and software aspects of system-on-chip development, contributing to computing, connectivity and AI feature integration across the life cycle of chips,” Jain said.
The company has over 1,000 engineers in Bengaluru and Noida. They act as an extension of its global operations, enabling MediaTek to address multiple technology verticals from within the country, including consumer electronics devices, cars, automotive platforms, and IoT devices, he said.
“The proportion of products designed here, built here, and sold both in India and globally is only going to increase,” Jain said. “Looking ahead, we're expanding into new verticals, including automotive, data centres, and ASICs, and we expect these collaborations and innovations to be major growth drivers in the coming years,” he said.
He said the company holds a 46% share in the smartphone chipset market. “Our focus is expanding into AI-powered automotive solutions (such as infotainment for Tata Punch EV and Skoda Slavia) and IoT ecosystems, collaborating with local innovators like JioThings,” he said.
Local manufacturing and exports from Indian fabs will complement this, boosting value addition from current 20-25% levels, he explained.
“Backed by $4.1 billion in global R&D with significant investments in our India centres, we're co-developing tailored solutions for edge-to-cloud computing, 5G RedCap, and beyond, creating jobs and innovation hubs. This isn't just about volume, it's about fostering self-reliance,” he said.
“As 5G moves into the mainstream, our broad Dimensity portfolio is enabling OEMs to deliver affordable, high-performance 5G smartphones across mid-tier and entry-level segments,” Jain said.
At the same time, MediaTek is strengthening its presence in the premium and flagship category with platforms such as the Dimensity 8450 and Dimensity 9500, which bring on-device AI, advanced gaming and improved power efficiency.
MediaTek's collaborations include devices from the Oppo Find X9 and Vivo X300 series, and smartphones based on the Dimensity 8000 series. Beyond handsets, the company is also helping increase adoption of 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) in India.
HFCL recently unveiled a 5G FWA indoor customer premises equipment powered by MediaTek's T750 platform, while the company also supplies chipsets for household connectivity devices from Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio.
The company is increasingly bullish on India's automotive and electric vehicle (EV) opportunity. MediaTek solutions power vehicles such as the Kinetic Green Flex and E-Luna X1, and it has collaborated with Jio Things on smart digital clusters and modules for two-wheeler EVs. In the four-wheeler segment, infotainment solutions based on MediaTek chips feature in models including the Tata Punch EV and Skoda Slavia, Jain said.
Looking ahead to 6G and generative AI, MediaTek is prioritising secure, power-efficient on-device AI capabilities that reduce reliance on the cloud, improve privacy and align with emerging data protection and sovereignty requirements, he said.
Nearly all of MediaTek's chipsets now include a neural processing unit (NPU) designed to scale across price tiers, with software support through its NeuroPilot platform and collaborations with partners such as Google, he added.
By 2030, MediaTek's success in India would be defined less by raw market share and more by ecosystem leadership, particularly in IoT and automotive, Jain said.
