Taapsee Pannu Opens Up On Film Industry's 'Obsession' With Female Actors' Cleavage, Midriff
Taapsee Pannu, who was recently seen in Anubhav Sinha’s Assi, recently opened up about the industry’s obsession with female actors’ midriffs and cleavage. Addressing her previously viral comment about Bollywood and the South film industries, she stated that her words were misconstrued and blown out of proportion. She said it’s not really about any specific body part, but about the overall ‘obsession’ with showing women in a way that appeals to the male gaze across industries.
Taapsee Pannu talks about the film industry’s obsession with female actors’ cleavage and midriff
The actress recently sat down for an interview with Galatta Plus, where she clarified her recent remark. Taapsee shared that during a previous podcast, she was asked about claims that the South industry focuses on the midriff, while Hindi cinema highlights cleavage. She said that her reply from the previous conversation was taken out of context. According to her, the real problem isn’t about midriff or cleavage specifically, but about the larger gaze through which women are often portrayed on screen.
She said, “I don’t know what the obsession is, but let’s own that there’s an obsession, whether in Hindi or in the South. Which part of yours is highlighted, that’s not the point. The point is, there’s an obsession. I never really demarcated it like Hindi is obsessed with cleavage and South with the midriff. It was obviously awkward for the director as well because they had to convey this to me. And how do you do that when the set hardly has any women, right? So, you have to convey it indirectly. When she comes back from the van, the director obviously has to check whether it works or not. So, this whole process is slightly awkward."
Further, Taapsee also defended doing those parts as she was new to the industry and thought that’s how it’s done. She said that a director is like the captain of a ship, and as an actor, one has to follow the captain’s vision unless it crosses a clear line. She admitted that at the time, she felt that since other heroines were doing such roles, she was expected to do them too. However, she doesn’t look back with regret, explaining that if she hadn’t taken up those parts, she might have always wondered ‘what if’. She also noted that in the industry, being labelled a mainstream actress often comes with doing certain kinds of roles, and without them, that tag may not come easily.
