Pakistan secured a narrow five-run victory over Sri Lanka in their T20 World Cup Super 8 match. Despite the win, Pakistan's semi-final aspirations were extinguished due to their negative net run rate. England and New Zealand advanced from Group 2, with the Black Caps' superior net run rate proving crucial.
Pakistan edged past Sri Lanka by five runs in their T20 World Cup Super 8 clash on Saturday, but the narrow win was not enough to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
Batting first, Pakistan piled up a massive 212 and needed to restrict Sri Lanka to 147 or below to significantly improve their net run rate. However, Sri Lanka responded strongly, scoring 207 before falling just five runs short. The slim margin meant Pakistan’s net run rate remained in the negative.
As per the updated Group 2 points table, Pakistan finished with three points from three matches (1 win, 1 loss, 1 no result) and a net run rate of -0.123. Sri Lanka ended their campaign at the bottom, losing all three matches and finishing with zero points and a net run rate of -1.950.
England topped the group with a perfect record — three wins in three matches — collecting six points and an NRR of +1.096 to comfortably seal a semi-final berth.
New Zealand, despite managing just one win in the Super 8 stage, also progressed to the semi-finals. The Black Caps finished second with three points but a superior net run rate of +1.390, which proved decisive in separating them from Pakistan.
With that, both Pakistan and Sri Lanka bow out of the tournament, while England and New Zealand advance to the knockout stage.

India must beat West Indies to keep their semi-final hopes alive. The South Africa vs Zimbabwe fixture is effectively a dead rubber, as the result is unlikely to impact the qualification battle between India and West Indies.
South Africa currently top the group with four points from two wins, while West Indies and India are tied on two points each, separated by net run rate. Zimbabwe have lost both their matches and are out of contention.
