West Bengal: Suvendu Adhikari raises questions on need for SIR
Suvendu Adhikari raised concerns about discrepancies between birth and voter registrations in West Bengal. He alleged widespread corruption within the Trinamool Congress, accusing the Chief Minister and other leaders of involvement. Adhikari claimed vote rigging occurred during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Kolkata: Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday expressed concern about the need for SIR in a situation where the birth rate is lower than voter card registration in West Bengal over the last ten years. Amid the SIR row, when opposition parties were seen protesting inside and outside Parliament, Adhikari's comments come as a major shock.
"SIR should be implemented and it must happen. We have learned that the ECI has sent directions to the DEOs to find out if the number of voter registrations has increased compared to birth registrations, and this should be tallied. Around 2.5% more voter registrations than birth registrations have been noticed in the last ten years, as per our knowledge. If we compare the growth in the voter list and the birth list—who are these extra people? There are double, triple voters, duplicate voters, dead voters, and even Bangladeshi voters who were born in Bangladesh and, due to a lack of fencing (courtesy of Mamata Banerjee), have entered Bengal and obtained EPIC and Aadhar cards now," Adhikari said, slamming the West Bengal Chief Minister for her unwillingness to provide land for fencing.
"In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, what TMC did was switch off CCTV cameras in the morning and evening for four hours to rig votes. I have the entire document. Rigging was done in 35,000 booths," Adhikari claimed. "That is why Trinamool was protesting when the new tender was issued during the recent Kaliganj bypoll and CCTV installations were related to that work," Adhikari said.
"We will not allow any inappropriate work in the 2026 polls," he added.
Adhikari stated that there is an ecosystem of corruption. "The whole Trinamool is corrupt. Trinamool MLA Jiban Krishna is a collector of money. There are hundreds of 'Bhatija's collectors.' The Chief Minister is also part of the nexus. They have cheated the youth. The whole system is an ecosystem of thieves operating in collaboration with IPAC."
Calling for change, Adhikari said, "Bring BJP to power and we will send them to jail. When everywhere it is the Bua-Bhatija (aunt-nephew) nexus, it will end." "There are so many collectors collecting money. More than 100 collectors are spread across the state. The money has reached Kolkata's Kalighat. Jiban Krishna—the whole cabinet is chor (thieves). The CM has led the ecosystem of thieves. Her family is the biggest beneficiary. Jiban Krishna has deployed TMC workers into the network to collect money," Adhikari claimed.
"Bring BJP to power and corruption will stop. We will bring all thieves to justice and give justice to the people," Adhikari said, adding that this is the time to bring 'parivartan' (change). Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also called for "parivartan" in a recent rally in Kolkata.
