CBSE: Students Must Have APAAR ID To Appear In Board Exams
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced two major changes regarding board exams. From the 2026-27 academic session, students must have an APAAR ID to register for board exams; registration will not be possible without this ID. Additionally, starting in 2028, Class 10 board exams for Maths, Science, and Social Science will be conducted at two levels, enhancing organisation, transparency, and digitisation in the education system.
APAAR ID, or Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry, will serve as a digital academic identity for each student, securely storing their entire academic record for easy access. A CBSE review indicated that by 2025-26, less than 50% of students in board-affiliated schools had obtained an APAAR ID. Therefore, from 2026-27, it will be mandatory for students in grades 9 to 12 to provide an APAAR ID during registration and when filling out the List of Candidates (LOC).
Board data reveals slow progress in issuing APAAR IDs in many states. For instance, in West Bengal, only 9.01% of Class 9 students and 17.83% of Class 11 students have APAAR IDs. In Haryana, the figures are slightly better, with 54.42% of Class 9 students and 54.80% of Class 11 students having IDs. States like Gujarat and Bihar also have low percentages, with Gujarat at 27.59% for Class 9 and 19.94% for Class 11, and Bihar at 23.59% for Class 9 and 26.01% for Class 11. CBSE has committed to providing special support to schools in these states to achieve better results next year.
CBSE 2028 Board Exams At Two Levels
Furthermore, from 2028, CBSE will conduct Class 10 board exams for Maths, Science, and Social Science at two levels. Currently, only Maths is offered at basic and standard levels. Starting in the 2026-27 session, “standard" and “advanced" levels will be introduced for these subjects in Class 9, leading to two levels in board exams in 2028. This change will help students choose subjects based on their abilities.
Schools will have time to adapt to the new system as NCERT develops new textbooks in line with the National Curriculum Framework 2023. The old curriculum will remain in use for the 2026-27 session while the new textbooks are being developed.
These decisions by CBSE indicate a move towards a more digital and organised education system. The APAAR ID will ensure secure and transparent student records, while the introduction of dual-level exams will allow students to pursue their studies according to their abilities. These changes are expected to have a significant impact on the school education system in the coming years.
