The stock market crashed by over 1.8% on Tuesday, due to which investors lost more than Rs 11 lakh crore. The plunge occurred due to concerns mount about the economic impact of the war amid an elusive peace deal between the United States and Iran.

The benchmark Sensex had fallen more than 1,450 points, or 1.9%, at the end of the session. The Nifty had fallen more than 430 points, or 1.8%.

The benchmark indices fell for the fourth consecutive trading session. The stock market had recovered marginally in April after a steep fall in March.

The Indian rupee also weakened to a record low of 95.6 against the United States dollar amid elevated global oil prices and economic headwinds caused by the conflict in West Asia. Read on.

The National Testing Agency cancelled the 2026 undergraduate National Eligibility cum Entrance Test following allegations of a paper leak. An investigation was launched after a “guess paper” circulated in Rajasthan contained questions that closely matched the NEET paper.

The NEET-UG examination, which was conducted on May 3, is the entrance test for admission to undergraduate medical courses in India.

The National Testing Agency has announced that the test will be re-conducted, and the dates will be notified separately. The agency said that the decision had been taken after a preliminary investigation by the law enforcement authorities showed that the integrity of the examination process “could not be allowed to stand”. Garga Chatterjee, the leader of pro-Bengali advocacy group Bangla Pokkho, has been arrested for making allegations about the tampering of Electronic Voting Machines during the West Bengal Assembly elections. He was arrested following a complaint by the Election Commission.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand claimed that Chatterjee’s posts about alleged EVM tampering “caused different perceptions among political parties and also created confusion”. The police had sent Chatterjee notices twice asking him to appear for questioning, but he did not appear before the authorities, due to which he was arrested, the official said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party won the West Bengal elections on May 4, ending the Trinamool Congress’ 15-year tenure in the state. The BJP won 207 seats, while the TMC won 80 constituencies. Read on.
