SpiceJet Soars Nearly 20% In Four Sessions: Key Triggers Behind The Sharp Rally

SpiceJet Shares Rally: Shares of low-cost carrier SpiceJet rose up to 5% to an intraday high of Rs 36 on Wednesday, December 10, extending their winning streak for the fourth straight session. With today's gains, the stock has now surged 19% over this period.

The rally follows the DGCA's directive asking IndiGo to cut 10% of its winter flight schedule after a week of severe operational disruption that led to over 5,000 flight cancellations due to a pilot shortage. With nearly 110 flights per day now expected to be redistributed to other airlines, the development creates a significant opportunity for competitors such as SpiceJet to absorb additional demand.

Separately, SpiceJet conducted an analyst meeting on Tuesday. Following the discussion, domestic brokerage Prabhudas Lilladher said while the airline's planned damp-lease aircraft additions may offer a short-term capacity boost, a sustained turnaround hinges on reactivating its grounded fleet. Eight Boeing aircraft are expected to return to service by April 2026, along with new inductions. The brokerage also noted that ongoing negotiations with lessors over outstanding dues remain critical, and any substantial haircut would materially improve the airline's liquidity.

In operational updates, the airline announced the induction of two Boeing 737 aircraft into its fleet. Both planes have cleared regulatory processes and commenced commercial operations on November 26 and 29. They are currently deployed on key routes such as Delhi–Bangkok, Ahmedabad–Dubai and Ahmedabad–Kolkata, enhancing SpiceJet's domestic and international connectivity.

Last week, Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh said the airline would operate 100 additional flights over the coming days to help stranded passengers. Calling the recent disruptions “extremely unfortunate," Singh said SpiceJet aims to support travellers while welcoming the government's decision to set up a committee to investigate the crisis.

Despite the recent rally, SpiceJet shares remain down 38% on a year-to-date basis and hover near their 52-week low of Rs 28.13.

Meanwhile, IndiGo — which controls nearly 66% of India's domestic aviation market — continues to grapple with widespread operational challenges due to the new Flight Duty Time Limitations norms. The carrier's inability to recalibrate its pilot rosters under the revised rules triggered a severe manpower crunch, culminating in over 1,000 flight cancellations on Friday alone. Shares of parent company InterGlobe Aviation have extended their decline, posting their ninth consecutive session of losses and shedding over 17% in eight sessions, wiping out nearly Rs 40,000 crore in market value.
