Shubman Gill Likely To Miss South Africa ODIs As India Confront Leadership Void: Report
India's ODI skipper Shubman Gill is all set to miss the upcoming three-match series against South Africa, according to a report in The Times of India, having suffered a neck injury during the first Test against the same opponent, with the Indian team management now wondering who will be the stand-in skipper.
Gill, who travelled from Guwahati to Mumbai on Friday, has been advised additional rest by Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala but is expected to be fit in time for the five-match T20I series against the same opponents beginning December 9.
A new evaluation will be held next week to assess Gill's recovery and determine the way forward.
“Unfortunately, Gill will not be available for selection for the three ODIs vs South Africa. He has been advised to get more rest by the specialists and continues to be monitored by the BCCI medical team," a BCCI source told The Times of India.
With Gill and Iyer unavailable, the men's senior selection committee will need to put together a temporary leadership group for the South Africa series. Star wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul, Axar Patel and Rishabh Pant are among the names which might be considered when the selectors convene in Guwahati in the coming days.
The current ODI lineup is right-handed and the think tank is keen to add a few southpaws who can shift the tempo. With Iyer out, both Pant and Tilak Varma could be vying for the No. 4 slot, while Yashasvi Jaiswal is expected to slot straight into the XI in Gill's absence.
India's top six in Australia featured Axar Patel as the lone southpaw, prompting the think tank to consider more left-handed middle-order options, according to the report.
Star allrounder Washington Sundar could even be in line for a promotion, as the team looks to maintain a left-right balance with the regular top three, Gill, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, all being right-handers.
