Should You Buy the iPhone 17 Pro Now or Wait for the iPhone 18 Pro? Reddit Says…
If you’re stuck deciding whether to buy the iPhone 17 Pro right now or hold out for the iPhone 18 Pro, you’re not alone. A recent Reddit thread on this exact dilemma pulled in a genuinely useful range of opinions, and it’s worth breaking down for anyone facing the same decision.
This piece is based on a discussion thread on Reddit, where users shared their own experiences and opinions on the iPhone 17 Pro versus iPhone 18 Pro dilemma.
Want to upgrade from iPhone 13 (128GB storage)
The original poster laid out a fairly common scenario. They’ve been using a regular iPhone 13 with 128GB storage since launch, so around five years now.
Battery health has dropped to 70 percent, and storage has become a real headache, forcing them to constantly delete photos and videos just to keep the phone usable.
Since they typically keep a phone for about five years, they’re planning to go big this time with a 1TB model. The only thing holding them back is the iPhone 18 Pro, and specifically, rumours that it could cost around 200 dollars more than the current Pro lineup.
Their question to the community was simple. Is it worth waiting three more months and paying extra for the iPhone 18 Pro, or should they just buy the iPhone 17 Pro now and commit to it for the next five years?
The Reddit community leaned towards buying now
One of the top responses on the thread made a pretty compelling case for not waiting. As the commenter put it, the usual advice to always wait for the newer phone doesn’t really apply this time around, largely because of the expected price increase.
They pointed out that the iPhone 18 Pro looks like an incremental update over the 17 Pro, meaning most of what you’d gain by waiting is a slightly longer window of OS updates, a camera refresh, and internal changes most people won’t notice in daily use.
They also flagged a practical concern, supply chain pressure. With memory prices rising globally, they warned that inventory challenges could make it harder to actually get an iPhone 18 Pro at launch, adding another reason to just buy the 17 Pro now rather than deal with possible delays and a higher price tag.
This comment resonated strongly with other users, picking up considerable support in the thread.
Not everyone agreed it’s “just incremental" though
A counterpoint came from a Samsung user who’s actually planning to switch to the iPhone 18 Pro this year. They pushed back on the idea that this generation is purely incremental, pointing to a new chip lithography, a more efficient modem chip, and a variable aperture camera system as changes significant enough to matter.
That variable aperture detail specifically got backed up by another commenter, who shared a more personal angle.
Their mother is a wedding photographer and is reportedly holding off specifically for the iPhone 18 Pro, since a variable aperture lens genuinely narrows the gap between phone cameras and dedicated photography gear, a meaningful upgrade for anyone shooting professionally.
That said, not everyone was convinced the camera changes would matter much for the average user. One reply summed it up bluntly, suggesting even the camera updates are likely to be barely noticeable for most people day to day.
A more urgent warning: storage problems can actually kill your phone
Separately, another commenter raised a genuinely useful warning specifically about the original poster’s low storage situation. They cautioned that running critically low on storage isn’t just inconvenient, it can potentially cause a phone to enter an endless boot loop, essentially getting stuck restarting over and over without fully powering on.
This claim sparked a bit of debate in the replies. Some users questioned it, assuming you could simply delete files to fix the issue.
But others confirmed it from personal experience, including one user who said this exact thing happened to them on a 64GB device, leaving the phone essentially unusable since they couldn’t even access it to delete anything. Their takeaway was clear, this problem is preventable, but only by making sure you don’t let your storage fill up completely in the first place.
A cheaper alternative: skip Pro entirely
Interestingly, one commenter suggested a completely different path altogether, skipping the Pro line this year in favour of the regular iPhone 17. According to them, this year’s base model comes with nearly all the features that used to be Pro-exclusive, most notably the display.
Another user backed this up with a real-world experience, sharing that they’d upgraded from an iPhone 13 mini to the regular iPhone 17 two months ago and found the difference between the 17 and 17 Pro fairly minimal for their needs.
This sparked a small side conversation about phone size adjustment, with the same user admitting they got used to the larger size faster than expected.
Clearing up the release date confusion
A chunk of the thread also focused on when these phones will actually launch, and there was some understandable confusion here. One user believed the entire iPhone 18 lineup might launch early next year, but others quickly clarified the situation.
According to the community consensus, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to launch around September 18, following Apple’s usual autumn schedule.
However, the standard iPhone 18 model and Apple’s rumoured foldable phone are expected to arrive separately, sometime in early 2027 instead. One commenter speculated Apple may be intentionally giving the foldable its own dedicated launch window, rather than bundling it in with the rest of the lineup, a theory that others in the thread agreed with.
What this all means if you’re facing the same decision
Reading through the full thread, a few clear takeaways emerge. If your current phone is genuinely struggling, especially with storage issues bad enough to risk real problems, waiting three extra months carries real risk of its own.
If photography is a serious priority for you specifically, the rumoured variable aperture camera on the iPhone 18 Pro might be worth the wait and the extra cost. But if you mainly care about a reliable, well-priced upgrade without chasing every new feature, both the current iPhone 17 Pro and even the standard iPhone 17 look like solid, cheaper alternatives that Reddit users seem genuinely happy with.
