Share Market Updates Today: Sensex Falls 500 Points, Nifty Below 22,600; SMIDs Under Pressure
The Indian stock markets declined in the early trade on Monday amid geopolitical tensions and higher crude oil prices, with the BSE Sensex trading 500 points or 0.54% lower at 72,810.57 and the NSE Nifty falling 140 points or 0.47% to below 22,600 at 22,580.35 in the early trade.
Among 30 Sensex constituents, 19 were trading in the red. Reliance, Sun Pharma, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Adani Ports, and Bharti Airtel were down by up to 2.31 per cent in the early trade, as of 10:00 am. On the other hand, Trent, Titan, Tech Mahindra, Infosys, and Axis Bank were trading higher by 5.40 per cent.
The weakness was more pronounced in the broader market, highlighting a clear deterioration in risk appetite. The Nifty Smallcap 100 declined 0.62 per cent, while the NIFTY Midcap 100 also edged lower. The sustained underperformance of mid- and small-cap segments points to continued unwinding in high-beta pockets.
Sectoral trends remained decisively negative, with selling pressure visible across defensives and cyclicals alike. Pharma and healthcare stocks bore the brunt of the decline, with the Nifty Pharma falling sharply, while FMCG and chemicals also remained under pressure. The NIFTY Oil & Gas index dropped over 1.5 per cent, reflecting concerns around elevated crude prices and margin pressures.
On the other hand, select pockets showed resilience. The NIFTY IT index managed modest gains, supported by global cues, while metals and PSU banks also held firm, indicating selective buying amid broader weakness.
Banking stocks remained a drag on the headline indices. The Nifty Bank declined 0.37 per cent, with private banks underperforming. The Nifty Private Bank fell more sharply, while PSU banks continued to show relative outperformance, suggesting a defensive tilt within the financial space.
Volatility indicators signalled rising nervousness in the market. The India VIX surged nearly 4 per cent to 26.47, reflecting increased hedging activity and expectations of sharper market swings ahead. Elevated VIX levels typically coincide with fragile sentiment and uncertain near-term direction.
The rupee opened higher on Monday, supported by spillover effects of the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) recent actions. The rupee opened 5 paise higher at 93.13 versus the US dollar and gained further to 92.85, which is 33 paise higher as against the previous close of 93.18 on Thursday.
V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investments Ltd, said, “With uncertainty over the West Asia conflict looming large the market will continue to be volatile responding to potential good and bad news. The potential for further escalation of the war is high in the next few days. The market will be keenly watching the response of crude prices to war-related events. If, by any chance, the Hormuz Strait is opened, the market will respond positively even if the conflict continues."
Meanwhile there are some important trends in the market from which investors can benefit. IT segment has firmed up despite overall market weakness. There is a short-term trade in IT since the Q4 results will be better than expectations and the segment will benefit from the depreciation in rupee. Similarly, there is opportunity for long-term investors in banking stocks which are attractively valued. The sharp correction in prices in banking, particularly in private sector banks, is only due to the sustained FII selling. The fundamentals of the sector are strong and leading indicators suggest healthy deposit and credit growth. Patient investors will be rewarded, he added.
