The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced the final redemption price for Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) 2017-18 Series-XIII, issue date December 26, 2017. SGBs come with a fixed tenure of eight years, but investors are given the flexibility to exit early. As per RBI guidelines, SGB premature redemption is allowed only after the completion of the fifth year from the date of the gold bond series issue.
The final redemption date of the above tranche is December 26, 2025, the RBI has said in a statement.
The final redemption price of the SGB series due on December 26, 2025, will be Rs 13,563 per unit of SGB.
The final price is based on a simple average of the closing price of gold of 999 purity for the three business days, i.e., December 22, 2025, December 23, 2025, and December 24, 2025.
The final redemption price of a SGB series is based on a simple average of the closing price of 999 purity gold of previous three business days from the date of redemption, as published by India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd (IBJA).
The SGB 2017-18 Series-XIII was issued at Rs 2,866 per gram without discount, as per a Ministry of Finance release as on December 15, 2017. For online purchase, the rate was Rs 2,816. It will yield an absolute simple return of nearly 382% on the date of the final redemption.
The absolute return comes to be Rs 13,563 -Rs 2,816 = Rs 10,747 (without factoring in the interest). In percentage terms, it is 10,747 ÷ 2,816× 100 = 381.6%.
Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) Scheme, managed by the RBI on behalf of the Government of India, offers a secure, paper/demat alternative to holding physical gold, eliminating storage and purity concerns while paying a 2.5% annual interest to a bond holder. The premature redemption of SGBs is allowed after 5 years from the date of the issue, on interest payout dates. The bonds are tradable, transferable, and can also be used as loan collateral.
There may be a risk of capital loss if the market price of gold declines. However, the investor does not lose in terms of the units of gold which he has paid for, as per FAQs available on the RBI website.
Person residents in India as defined under Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999, are eligible to invest in SGBs. Eligible investors include individuals, HUFs, trusts, universities and charitable institutions. Individual investors with subsequent change in the residential status from resident to non-resident may continue to hold SGBs till early redemption/maturity.
The investor will be advised one month before the maturity date regarding the ensuing maturity of the bond.
On the date of maturity, maturity proceeds will be credited to the bank account of the holder as per the details on record.
In case, there are changes in any details, such as, the account number, email ID, the investor must intimate their bank/SHCIL/PO promptly.
