Cyclone Montha intensifies into a severe storm, set to bring heavy rain and strong winds to Andhra Pradesh's coastal areas. Thousands of relief centers are ready with essential supplies. Residents in vulnerable zones are advised to stay indoors and follow official guidance. High sea waves and ocean currents are also expected along the coast.
Andhra Pradesh is bracing for the full impact of Cyclone Montha, which intensified into a severe cyclonic storm early Tuesday morning. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said the storm strengthened around 5:30 am and is set to bring intense rainfall and powerful winds across several coastal districts of the state.
Cyclone Montha Impact: 3,778 Villages to Face Heavy Rainfall, Says CM Chandrababu Naidu
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said the cyclone's impact will be “severe” from Tuesday morning, with 338 mandals and 3,778 villages likely to experience heavy rainfall. “The impact of Montha will be severe from Tuesday morning. According to officials, 338 mandals and 3,778 villages have been forecast to receive heavy rainfall,” Naidu said in an official release issued late Monday night.He, however, assured citizens that there was no need to panic and urged everyone to remain alert and follow safety advisories. During a review meeting, Naidu directed officials to ensure real-time communication with the public through voice alerts and public address systems across 26 districts.
Thousands of Relief Centres Set Up Across Andhra Pradesh
In preparation for Cyclone Montha's impact, the state government has established 3,174 rehabilitation centres across 22 districts, managed by 3,778 secretaries. These centres have been stocked with essential commodities including food and medical supplies.Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema district has the highest number of relief centres (650), followed by Bapatla (481) and East Godavari (376). Officials have been instructed to keep these centres operational round the clock until the cyclone weakens.
Heavy Rainfall Warning for Coastal Districts from Srikakulam to Nellore
According to Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) managing director Prakhar Jain, heavy rainfall will lash areas from Srikakulam to Nellore. He cautioned people against venturing outdoors and urged them to contact control rooms in case of emergencies.“People should not come out under any circumstances. If needed, the control room should be informed,” Jain said in a statement.
He confirmed that Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli, Nellore, Konaseema and Kakinada districts are already witnessing heavy downpours. In Visakhapatnam, Kapuluppada recorded 125 mm rainfall, followed by Visakhapatnam Rural (120 mm) and Anandapuram (117 mm).
Between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm on Monday, the IMD recorded 52 mm rainfall in Visakhapatnam, 21 mm in Kakinada, 18 mm in Narasapur, and 15 mm in Arogyavaram.
INCOIS Warns of High Sea Waves and Ocean Currents Along Andhra Coast
The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) issued a warning for high sea waves up to 4.7 metres across several coastal districts. Ocean current alerts were also sounded for East Godavari and Nellore districts, forecasting current speeds between 0.8 and 1.2 metres per second from 7 am to 7 pm on Tuesday.“Harbour and marine operations should exercise caution,” the agency said.
According to INCOIS, sea conditions are expected to be rough to very rough along the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts, worsening further to very rough to high from Tuesday morning and very high from Tuesday evening until early hours of October 29.
Ports Hoist Danger Signals as Cyclone Nears Landfall
Danger signal number seven (DS-VII) has been hoisted at Kakinada Port, while DS-VI is in effect at Visakhapatnam and Gangavaram Ports. Machilipatnam, Nizampatnam, and Krishnapatnam Ports are under DS-V alert.A storm surge warning has also been issued, predicting a one-metre rise above astronomical tide levels. This could cause flooding in low-lying coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Yanam around the time of landfall.
Cyclone Montha: Meaning and Current Status
The name ‘Montha', suggested by Thailand, means a fragrant flower.
