Six killed as passenger train collides with a goods train near Bilaspur

At least six persons were killed and five injured after a passenger train collided with a goods train near the Bilaspur railway station in Chhattisgarh on Tuesday (November 4, 2025), officials said. The Railway Ministry has ordered an inquiry.

Rescue operations are currently under way.

“An unexpected incident occurred today near Bilaspur station, involving the derailment of a freight train and a local MEMU. Six people died and five passengers were injured. They are receiving appropriate treatment at nearby hospitals,” stated the South East Central Railway through a bulletin issued at 7.35 p.m.

Speaking to The Hindu over the phone, Bilaspur District Collector Sanjay Agrawal confirmed that four deaths had been reported and several others were injured. He said the total number of injured passengers was still being compiled as some were trapped under a coach. “At least one person is critically injured,” he added.

The incident occurred around 4 p.m., when the MEMU passenger train was heading to Bilaspur from Gevra in neighbouring Korba district, Railway officials said. A police officer added that the passenger train rammed into a goods train from behind between Gatora and Bilaspur railway stations.

All measures are being taken to treat the injured persons, a Railway spokesperson said. Visuals emerging from the crash site showed the coach of the passenger train piling onto the wagon of the goods train.

In response to questions on the speed of the trains, Bilaspur Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Suskar Vipul Vilasrao told reporters that while one train running behind another on the same track was part of normal operations, the exact reason could be established only after an inquiry by the Commissioner of Railway Safety.

A constable present at the site said that hydraulic cutters were being used to remove the metal and rescue the victims.

The Railways has announced compensation for those affected by the accident. A sum of ₹10 lakh each will be provided to the next of kin of the deceased, ₹5 lakh each to those seriously injured, and ₹1 lakh each to those with minor injuries.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has expressed grief over the accident. “The news of the train accident near Bilaspur is extremely saddening,” he said. He added that the Bilaspur District Collector has been instructed to provide all possible assistance and relief.

“Railway and administrative teams immediately engaged in relief and rescue operations. All necessary resources and medical assistance are being ensured for the treatment of the injured. The State government is monitoring the situation with utmost diligence and sensitivity,” Mr. Sai posted on X.

The Railways has also issued helpline numbers for passengers and their families. “South East Central Railway informs that in view of an unforeseen situation, the following helpline numbers have been issued for the convenience of passengers and their families,” a statement said.
