'Settling Hotspot Issues': After Trump, Now China Claims It Mediated India-Pakistan Conflict
After the United States, China is now seeking its share of credit for “mediating" the India-Pakistan conflict. Beijing on Tuesday claimed that it played a role in easing tensions between the two countries earlier this year, months after a military confrontation between the two neighbours in May 2025. The remarks were made by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at a discussion on the international situation and China's foreign relations in Beijing.
However, India on Wednesday firmly rejected Chinese claim that any third party including China mediated during Operation Sindoor.
Speaking at the event, Wang said the world was witnessing a sharp rise in conflicts and instability. He said local wars and cross-border conflicts had increased more than at any time since the end of the Second World War. According to him, geopolitical uncertainty continued to spread across regions.
Wang said China had taken what he described as an “objective and just stance" while dealing with international conflicts. Claiming a diplomatic role in several global issues, Wang said China had mediated in northern Myanmar, the Iranian nuclear issue, tensions between Pakistan and India, the conflict between Palestine and Israel, and the recent tensions between Cambodia and Thailand. His comments were reported by news agency PTI.
“Following this Chinese approach to settling hotspot issues, we mediated in northern Myanmar, the Iranian nuclear issue, the tensions between Pakistan and India, the issues between Palestine and Israel, and the recent conflict between Cambodia and Thailand," Wang Yi said.
The claim comes months after India and Pakistan were locked in a military confrontation following a terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The operation was later expanded to include military installations.
India has repeatedly rejected claims of third-party mediation in its dealings with Pakistan. New Delhi has maintained that the May 7-10 confrontation was resolved through direct talks at the military level between the two countries, without the involvement of any external power.

China's remarks also come after US President Donald Trump made repeated claims about mediating between India and Pakistan, which India firmly pushed back against.
Wang's statement marks the second time in recent months that a major power has publicly claimed a role in easing India-Pakistan tensions, despite India's clear position that such matters are handled bilaterally.
