'Serious Law And Order Breakdown': Another Malaysian MP Condemns Hindu Killings In Bangladesh
Another Malaysian senator has condemned the targeted killings of Hindus in Bangladesh, calling out his government's silence over the alleged atrocities.
YB Senator Dato' Sivaraj Chandran, a prominent member of the Upper House of the Parliament of Malaysia, has issued a formal and scathing condemnation of the recent wave of targeted violence against the Hindu minority in Bangladesh.
In a public statement, Chandran highlighted what he described as a total collapse of legal order in Bangladesh while stressing on the brutal nature of the attacks. He said this signals a profound and dangerous failure of institutional safeguards within the region.
He specifically cited incidents of mob brutality, highlighting the stabbing and burning of victims as evidence of a “serious breakdown of law and order". He argued that such atrocities occur when “violence replaces due process" and when governing institutions fail to prevent collective anger from devolving into cold-blooded murder.
Chandran said this mob violence is not merely a series of isolated crimes but reflects a broader institutional failure to protect vulnerable populations. Addressing the geopolitical context, he noted that these events cannot be viewed in isolation as Bangladesh is part of a “shared region".
He, however, warned that when mob violence is allowed to take place unchecked, it “weakens confidence in governance" and has the potential to “undermine stability beyond national borders". A central component of his address was a sharp criticism of the Malaysian government's current silence on the matter.
The senator questioned why Malaysia, a nation that has historically spoken firmly on international issues involving civilian suffering and violations of human dignity, has yet to issue a clear statement. He urged Malaysian leaders to uphold consistent humanitarian standards, asserting that the principles of justice should not be “conditional nor applied selectively".
“If we claim to uphold justice and humanity as universal values, then we must be prepared to defend them consistently, even when it is uncomfortable to do so," Chandran said.
He said his statement is not an attempt to politicise a tragedy or assign blame, but rather a call to reaffirm the sanctity of human life. He stressed that no grievance or accusation can ever justify the killing of a human being without trial.
Warning that “when the world remains silent, violence learns that it can repeat itself", Chandran called on Malaysia to reclaim its moral standing. He said the nation's courage to speak when humanity is at stake is the true measure of its integrity, urging a firm stand for law, dignity, and the protection of all people.
