Sensex Settles 148 Points Lower After Choppy Session, Nifty Below 25,550; Power Grid Drops 3%

Sensex Today: Indian equity benchmarks ended lower for the second consecutive session on Thursday, weighed down by sharp selling in media, metal, and consumer durables stocks.

The Sensex slipped 148.14 points, or 0.18%, to close at 83,311.01, while the Nifty 50 declined 87.95 points, or 0.34%, to settle at 25,509.70. Both indices remained volatile through the session, trading with a negative bias.

Power Grid, Eternal, BEL, Bajaj Finance, and ICICI Bank were among the top losers, whereas Asian Paints, Reliance Industries, M&M, UltraTech Cement, and TCS were the key gainers.

Broader markets mirrored the weakness in benchmarks, with the Nifty Midcap 100 index falling 0.95% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 index dropping 1.4%.

Among sectors, Nifty Media led the decline with a 2.54% fall, followed by Nifty Metal (down 2.07%) and Consumer Durables (down 1.98%). On the other hand, Nifty IT and Auto were the only sectors to close in positive territory, gaining 0.18% and 0.06%, respectively.

Asian markets were trading higher following gains on the Wall Street. Last checked, Hong Kong's Hang Seng was up 0.87 per cent, Japan's Nikkei rose 0.93 per cent, and South Korea's Kospi was up 0.54 per cent.

Overnight, US equity market settled higher after the Supreme Court's questioning of President Donald Trump's tariffs raised hopes that some of the trade duties could be eased. The S&P 500 rose 0.37 per cent, the Nasdaq edged up 0.65 per cent, while the Dow Jones rose 0.48 per cent.
