Sensex Settles 116 Points Lower, Nifty At 26,142; Oil & Gas, IT, Pharma Stocks Drag
Sensex Today: Indian equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty50 closed lower on Wednesday, pressured by selling in oil and gas, pharmaceutical and information technology stocks, while overall trading activity remained subdued ahead of the Christmas holiday on Thursday.
The BSE Sensex slipped 116.14 points, or 0.14 per cent, to settle at 85,408.70. Similarly, the NSE Nifty50 declined 35.05 points, or 0.13 per cent, to end the session at 26,142.10.
On the BSE, Trent, UltraTech Cement and Maruti Suzuki emerged as the top gainers. In contrast, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Sun Pharma and Asian Paints were the biggest laggards.
On the NSE, Trent, Shriram Finance and Apollo Hospitals led the gainers' pack, while IndiGo, Adani Enterprises and Dr Reddy's Laboratories weighed on the index.
Broader markets delivered a mixed performance. The Nifty SmallCap 100 index advanced 0.28 per cent, while the Nifty MidCap 100 index ended 0.60 per cent lower.
On the sectoral front, Nifty Oil and Gas was the worst performer, declining 0.76 per cent, followed by Nifty Metal and Nifty Pharma, both down 0.51 per cent. On the positive side, Nifty Media gained 0.44 per cent, while Nifty Metal and Nifty Realty rose 0.15 per cent and 0.17 per cent, respectively.

Asia-Pacific markets were trading mixed on Wednesday, with several indexes set to close early in the lieu of the Christmas Eve holiday. Last checked, Japan's Nikkei 225 index was up 0.36 per cent, and South Korea's KOSPI index was up 0.42 per cent. Australia's S&P ASX 200 was down 0.58 per cent.
US equity markets settled higher for the fourth consecutive session on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 setting a fresh closing record, after delayed third-quarter GDP number came in better-than-expected. The US economy grew at a 4.3 per cent annual rate during the third quarter. Overnight, the S&P 500 index rose 0.46 per cent, the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.57 per cent, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average 0.16 per cent.
