What began as a coordinated strike over wages and working conditions spiralled into chaos in Gurugram’s IMT Manesar, as police used force to disperse thousands of protesting contractual workers amid rising tensions in the industrial belt.
After Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) was enforced in IMT Manesar, police used lathi charge on protesting workers outside the industrial hub, PTI reported. Section 163 was put in place to maintain law and order, banning gatherings of five or more people in the area.
Employees, including women, from more than 6 companies had gone on strike, demanding better wages and working conditions. Around 7,000 contractual workers gathered outside factory gates as part of a coordinated protest over minimum wage revisions and employment concerns.
The unrest is said to have escalated following tensions at Honda Scooter and Motorcycle India Private Limited (HMSI), after which workers from several units joined the strike to press for their demands.
Despite prohibitory orders, groups of workers assembled at multiple points across the industrial area. An argument broke out when workers refused to disperse, with police alleging that officers were pushed and attempts were made to snatch their phones.
As protesters raised slogans and attempted to block entry and exit points of the industrial hub, police used mild force to disperse the gathering, said a report by Hindustan Times. The situation quickly spiralled, with workers running to safety amid a stampede-like situation, officials said. Several protesters were injured, including one who reportedly suffered a head injury.
According to The Times of India, the mob also set a police motorcycle on fire, and cases are likely to be registered in connection with the violence. Deputy commissioner Ajay Kumar urged workers to maintain peace, stating that their grievances would be addressed through proper channels, and called for dialogue between workers and management to resolve the dispute, HT reported.
Prohibitory orders were imposed following inputs about possible protests and marches that could disturb public peace, obstruct traffic and threaten safety. “The prohibitory orders aim to ensure public safety, maintain peace and keep traffic movement smooth. The order takes immediate effect and will remain in force until further directions," TOI quoted the DC as saying.

The restrictions also prohibit carrying weapons such as firearms, swords, sticks, spears, axes and knives in public places, and ban road blockades and traffic disruptions.
The protesting workers said their wages have remained stagnant despite rising inflation and cost of living. As pr HT, worker representatives claimed that many contractual employees earn around Rs 12,000 per month for 8-hour shifts and demanded wage revisions and better job security.
Officials pointed out that the Haryana government had recently approved a 35% increase in minimum wages across categories, effective April 1, with revised salaries ranging between ₹15,220 and ₹19,425 depending on skill levels. Haryana labour minister Anil Vij said the hike would bring “positive changes" in workers’ lives and strengthen their economic condition, reported TOI.
Workers, however, maintained that implementation of the revised wages has been inconsistent. They insisted they would not return to work until their demands were met, calling the strike a fight for their rights and alleging that police action favoured management.
Security has since been tightened across IMT Manesar, with additional police deployment in place. Authorities said all necessary steps are being taken to maintain law and order, even as appeals for a peaceful resolution continue.
