Screen Time, Sugary Drinks And Busy Schedules: What’s Causing The Hydration Gap In Kids
There has been a rise in the concerning trend of the “hydration gap," which reflects the difference between the amount of water children are meant to consume and the amount they actually drink. With modern lifestyles, changing diets, and increased screen time, children today are at a higher risk of inadequate hydration.
Dehydration is often associated with extreme heat or illness, but even mild dehydration can affect children’s energy levels, digestion, and overall health.
Dr. V. Vidhya, Senior Consultant, Pediatrics, SIMS Hospital, Chennai, explains how this hydration gap occurs.
Increased screen time:
Children who spend hours on mobile phones, tablets, and television often become distracted and ignore their body’s signals, such as thirst. When deeply engaged in digital activities, they may forget to drink water for long periods.
Easy access to sugary beverages:
Children often have easier access to sugary drinks and may replace water with them. While these drinks may temporarily quench thirst, they do not hydrate the body as effectively as water.
Busy school schedules:
During school hours, children may forget to drink water or may not have enough opportunities to do so. Some students also avoid drinking water because they want to avoid visiting the restroom during class.
Reduced physical activity:
Lower levels of physical activity can lead to reduced water intake. When children sweat less, they may not feel as thirsty and therefore may not be reminded to drink water.
Lack of awareness:
Many children simply do not recognise when their bodies need water. It is therefore important for them to understand the early signs of mild dehydration.
Parents should be alert to signs of dehydration, including:
Persistent fatigue or headaches
Reduced stamina during daytime activities, sports, or play
Dark yellow urine or reduced frequency of urination
Dry lips, mouth, or cracked lips
Difficulty concentrating or increased irritability
Lethargy or frequent dizziness, especially during hot weather
Severe dehydration can occur when conditions such as diarrhoea or vomiting worsen. Symptoms may include sunken eyes, poor skin turgor, a weak pulse, and behavioural changes such as extreme irritability, confusion, or dizziness.
The hydration gap can be prevented through simple but consistent habits:
Encourage regular water breaks. Ask children to carry a reusable water bottle to school and while travelling.
Limit sugary drinks so that water remains the primary beverage.
Include water-rich foods such as watermelon, oranges, and cucumbers in their diet.
Create a hydration routine by encouraging children to drink water after waking up, before and after meals, and during playtime.
The hydration gap may seem subtle, but it is an important health concern. Ensuring that children stay adequately hydrated is one of the simplest yet most powerful steps parents can take to support their growth, energy levels, and overall well-being.
