Fake Holiday Notice Goes Viral
On Wednesday, a message claiming that all schools and colleges in Mumbai would remain shut on August 20 due to a ‘red' alert by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) went viral on social media. The fake notice, designed to look like an official post from BMC's verified account, spread rapidly across WhatsApp groups and other platforms, causing confusion among students and parents.
BMC quickly issued a clarification on X (formerly Twitter), dismissing the notice as fake. “This message is fake. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has not issued any such information through its official social media platforms," the civic body posted, while also sharing a screenshot of the forged message.

While Mumbai is on orange alert, neighbouring Raigad district is under a red alert with predictions of heavy to very heavy rainfall. IMD has also forecast heavy showers in parts of Thane and Palghar.
Flight operations at Mumbai airport are likely to face delays, while local train services may also be impacted due to the rain. Commuters have been advised to plan their travel accordingly.

According to meteorological reports, the intense rainfall is linked to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, coupled with strengthening monsoon winds.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reviewed the flood situation with the disaster management department and warned that the next 48 hours will be critical for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts, all under varying levels of alert.
