Scaling Indian chip startups tap Taiwan, South Korean foundries

The India Semiconductor Mission, through the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme, is lowering entry barriers by offering financial aid and access to advanced electronic design automation tools, enabling startups to address demand across sectors, he said.
The government announced the ₹76,000 crore India Semiconductor Mission on December 15, 2021, under the electronics and information technology ministry. In August this year, the government sanctioned design-linked incentives for 23 chip-design companies, including startups and micro, small and medium enterprises, such as Calligo Technologies and Vervesemi Microelectronics.
In addition, over the past four decades, the country has produced chip designers for Texas Instruments, Intel and AMD. "India is the second-largest centre for chip design for companies in the US, South Korea and Japan, creating a huge talent pool in the country," said Ganapathy Subramanian," onclick="showFullScrImg(this)"/>
India's semiconductor startups are increasingly tapping global foundries such as Taiwan-based TSMC and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), and South Korea's DB Hi-Tek, as they scale up production and commercialisation, according to people familiar with the development.
Calligo Technologies, which is building accelerators for high-powered computing and artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, and Mindgrove Technologies, whose chips go into applications such as smart cameras, wearables and security systems, are working with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for manufacturing. Vervesemi Microelectronics, a fabless semiconductor company, is working with TSMC, UMC and DB Hi-Tek for production.
"India's semiconductor startup ecosystem is gaining momentum due to the powerful alignment of government policy support, rising domestic and global demand," said Tarun Pathak, research director, Counterpoint Research.

This has also resulted in many of them starting up semiconductor companies from India, many of which are reaching a certain scale.
Tapping global foundries
Anantha P Kinnal, cofounder and CEO, Calligo Technologies, said the company produced 100 Octacore CPU chips, multi-part-wafer on TSMC 28nm node in 2023, which is currently used by universities and research laboratories in the US.
The company is now designing the next version of the chip, a 64-core system-on-chip, for high performance computing and AI workloads, he said. Calligo Technologies, a Bengaluru-based fabless semiconductor startup, designs and produces specialised silicon chips and has them manufactured by TSMC. Despite gaining momentum, India's semiconductor startup ecosystem continues to face several challenges, including high capital intensity and long design cycles which make entry and scaling up difficult.
