Russia, China Demand Release Of Nicolas Maduro, His Wife At UNSC Meeting Over Venezuela Crisis
Russia and China called on the United States to immediately release deposed Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro at the UN Security Council meeting called after the dramatic US operation in Venezuela.
At the meeting, Russian envoy to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, condemned the US “act of armed aggression" against Venezuela and called on Washington to release Maduro and his wife. “There is no and can be no justification for the crimes cynically perpetrated by the United States in Caracas. We firmly condemn the U.S. act of armed aggression against Venezuela, in breach of all international legal norms," he said.
China also called on the US to release Maduro and his wife, saying it was “deeply shocked" by the “unilateral, illegal and bullying" action taken by America.
“We demand that the United States change its course, cease its bullying and coercive practices, and develop relations and cooperation with regional countries on the basis of mutual respect, equality and noninterference in international affairs," said China's deputy UN representative Sun Lei.
US Vs Venezuela At UNSC Meeting
US Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, defended the Trump administration's actions, saying that Maduro had partnered with drug traffickers and narco-terrorists to send hundreds of tonnes of narcotics into the US.
“There is no war against Venezuela or its people. We are not occupying a country. This was a law enforcement operation," he said of the raid in which Maduro was captured. “The overwhelming evidence of his crimes will be presented openly in US court proceedings."
Waltz said the US will not waver in its actions to “protect Americans from the scourge of narco-terrorism and seeks peace, liberty and justice for the great people of Venezuela."
However, Venezuela's Ambassador to the UN, Samuel Reinaldo Moncada Acosta, called the US attack “illegitimate" that lacked legal justification. “Venezuela was the target of an illegitimate armed attack, lacking any legal justification, by the government of the United States of America," he said.
“The events of January 3 constitute a flagrant violation of the UN charter perpetrated by the US government, in particular the principal violation of the principle of sovereign equality of states, of the absolute prohibition of the use or threat of use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state."
Other Countries
Meanwhile, Latvia sided with the United States during the UNSC meeting, and Denmark extended solidarity with Venezuela. Denmark said that while it did not recognise Maduro as President, the future of the country should be decided by its own people.
The United Kingdom said it wished to see a peaceful transition and a prosperous future for Venezuela, reaffirming its commitment to international law and principles enshrined in UN Charter. France said it stood in solidarity with the people of Venezuela, noting that their right to choose their leader was taken away by Maduro. France noted that the military operation by the US ran contrary to international laws of non-use of force, undermined the foundation of the UN and weakened international peace.
Pakistan said it looked at the escalating tensions and instability with “profound concern". It noted that the UN Charter enshrines non-use of force and actions like the one by the US set a dangerous precedent. Islamabad called for dialogue and diplomacy and finding a solution through diplomatic means.
