Rodrigo de Paul won hearts with his kind gesture during the Lionel Messi G.O.A.T. India Tour at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Monday.
The Argentine footballer noticed a security officer shoving a young fan away as they were about to take a picture. De Paul pushed the man away and pulled the young kid closer for the pic.
The video on the incident went viral on social media.
Colourful confetti showered down on Lionel Messi as he concluded his whirlwind tour of four Indian cities with a brief appearance at New Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium on Monday. Nearly a full house enthusiastically cheered during his half-hour presence.
India, the world's most populous nation, had set aside its cricket obsession to embrace ‘Messi-mania' since the Argentine, eight-times Ballon d'Or winner, arrived late on Friday, with thousands of fans waiting outside Kolkata airport.
Saturday's event in Kolkata, however, descended into chaos when angry fans tore up seats and invaded the pitch after local politicians hijacked the event. The chief organiser was detained by police.
Events in Hyderabad and Mumbai featuring Messi, 38, along with his Inter Miami teammates Luis Suarez and Rodrigo de Paul proceeded smoothly, and Delhi was no exception.
The trio strolled around the field, occasionally kicking balls into the packed stands, and engaged in kickabouts with local children at a stadium that regularly hosts international cricket matches.
Cricket, however, did manage to make an appearance during the proceedings.
Messi, Suarez, and De Paul received Indian cricket team jerseys from International Cricket Council chairman Jay Shah, along with tickets for next year's Twenty20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
The hype around Messi's visit contrasts with the general gloom surrounding the state of Indian football.
India ranks a lowly 142nd in FIFA's world rankings, and the Indian Super League is in uncertainty as the All India Football Federation has failed to find a new commercial partner after its previous 10-year deal expired.
