RIR Electronics to set up Rs 618 crore silicon carbide semiconductor facility in Odisha: Company executive
ET had reported on Monday that the government will prioritise proposals for silicon carbide (SiC)-based wafer manufacturing under the second version of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), quoting officials. The ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) is currently finalising the contours of ISM 2.0 and SiC wafers have been accorded strategic priority, ET had reported, quoting officials.
In August, the first fabrication (fab) unit to manufacture SiC wafers got approval from the government, under the ISM. Chennai-based SicSem Private Limited is collaborating with Scotland-based Clas-SiC Wafer Fab, to establish a Rs 2,066 crore facility of SiC-based compound semiconductors in Bhubaneswar. Set to be the first commercial compound fab in India, it will have an annual capacity of 60,000 wafers and a packaging capacity of 96 million chips.

RIR Power Electronics, a high-power semiconductor company, is setting up a Rs 618 crore silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductor manufacturing facility in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, a senior global executive of the company told ET.
The project will get fiscal support from the Odisha state government, covering half of the investment.
Perry Schugart, chief marketing officer of Schugart said that silicon carbide technology is a "game-changer for power electronics" due to its "wideband gap properties that offer much faster switching speeds than silicon, leading to greater energy efficiency and lower heat generation".

Schugart explained the evolution of SiC technology in three waves: initial integration of SiC chips in conventional packaging, followed by advanced high-performance packaging that optimises thermal management, and now pushing towards high-voltage applications exceeding 3.3 kV, with the ambition to reach up to 20,000 volts—"a feat unachievable with silicon".
RIR's project consists of two phases; phase one begins this month and involves epitaxial wafer growth on pre-supplied silicon carbide wafers, while phase two, targeted for completion by December 2027, will establish a full silicon carbide wafer fabrication plant capable of producing high-voltage MOSFETs, IGBTs, and diodes, Schugart said. The facility will be built on approximately six acres of land provided by the Odisha government, which also offers ongoing fiscal incentives, he said.
Schugart said that in the high-voltage silicon carbide power space many competitors focus on lower voltage levels, while RIR uses its expertise for higher voltage and power capabilities.
"The partnership with the Odisha government was chosen as the best fit to complement RIR, separate from other approved semiconductor projects in Odisha. This initiative predates the latest India Semiconductor Mission approvals," he pointed out.
Beyond manufacturing, Schugart said RIR wants to drive energy efficiency advancements by reducing losses in power conversion. Citing a 2023 US grid study where only 33% of generated energy was utilised effectively, he pointed out silicon carbide technology's critical role in improving this figure through efficient energy processing.
RIR also has ongoing engagements supplying devices to Indian Railways and the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) but is awaiting confirmation to move from testing to large-scale supply of standard power electronics products.
Export-wise, RIR derives 20% of its revenue from international markets, with 80% from India, using its manufacturing footprint including facilities in Mumbai and Halol, Gujarat, and global talent pools chiefly from the US, where Schugart is based.
"The company's approach prioritises collaboration over building vertically integrated factories, exemplified by its recent partnership with Pro Asia Semiconductor Corporation in Taiwan for silicon carbide manufacturing," Schugart said. RIR intends to scale its resources as core competency needs grow, sourcing expertise globally, he added.
With the Odisha SiC plant addition, RIR aims to be one of the players to start power semiconductor manufacturing in India.
